See pic, was this a feature, or did someone butcher the bow?

As I recall it was an original option. Cutout for broadhead clearance.

Looks like a factory cut out for an arrow rest.

It is indeed a factory cutout for broadhead clearance.

Never saw that before. Seems odd.

It's original. Harold did his own thing.

From: George D. Stout
Date: 04-Dec-22

It's not odd, it's Harold did his hunting bows for broadhead clearance.

It is a cutout for broadhead clearance, I had several Groves bows great shooters.

Cool! Nice find!:)

COOL, I'd like to see it with it removed for shooting broadheads. Guessing it's not a total cutout, but a thin wedge just enough to let a BH pass?

I have a Drake that has the same type of cut-out feature. It looks so professional I have wondered if it was an add on by owner or an "option" offered?

From: George D. Stout

Steve, it's cut out during manufacturing for that purpose. You can build it out but it doesn't affect spine since it's forward of pivot.

Harold also built risers with full length overdraw channels and built in sypers to accomodate shooting overdrawn arrows.

Why does that bow need broadhead clearance? Other bows didn’t

babysaph.. because the arrows are 2 inches longer

Ok

Yes that’s a cutout for broad heads so you can use a shorter arrow, was made that way by the bower, not a hack job. Mine has the overdraw shelf for an even shorter arrow.

I have a 44# Groves bow just like it. I stuck a modified Bear Weatherrest in the cut out. Good shooting little bow.

From: Kelly

Yup, very common on Groves bows. Only works with an elevated rest.

I used the Prestige Magnum which had an overdraw feature so with the broadhead cutout I used almost 3” shorter arrows.

Here’s a Groves that I recently acquired, with the over draw. It’s a beauty and a good shooter. My 5” feathers hit the shelf though, even with a brace height of 8-1/4” Since this photo was taken I have replaced the Hoyt rest with a feather rest and a thin piece of leather located over the deepest part of the grip. Groves was way ahead of his time. He doesn’t get enough credit IMO

From: CStyles

Okay, I am odd. I did not see it right the first time. I thought there was a separate piece that sat in the relief that was slid forward. Now I see it is just a relief or recess cut into the riser.

Newell38, I agree completely. Harold's contributions to archery are very under appreciated.

CStyles ok me too I thought it was a wedge to remove for broadhead use. THANKS for clearing it up for me. LANCE thanks for your picture too.

I also own a Groves with an over draw in the handle like Knifeguy pictured shot my first deer with it still shoots a mean arrow.

When I first saw this, I thought it looked very odd.

Cutout for BH. Knife guy, I had one of those Groves with the BH cutout & overdraw. I shot an Elk & a Black Bear with it. 53#s. Groves made some awesome bows. He had a metal handle take down in the mid 60s similar to Golden Eagle take down in the mid 60s). They were used by many in archery tournaments.. My good friends was 70". Lots of great & beautiful bows in that era.

Groves wasn't the only one, and I am surprised at people being surprised at never seeing them. Guess that just shows how long I've been involved, and how darn old I am matter of fact. Here's a Sanders with a long cutout.

CStyles you should look up the history of groves and his bows. It's Pretty interesting.
