Just purchased a 66", 46#s @ 28" Massie Longhorn long bow from an estate sale. Can anyone tell me what materials he made the limbs from. There is a black layer in the laminations. Did he use carbon in the construction of his limbs? Also, the brace height was set at 8 inches? Is that normal for a Massie longhorn?

Jeff did use carbon in his limbs at times.

Brace height I would start at about 7.5" and go up or down until it was right for me.

The Massie Longhorn is a great long bow way ahead of its time. Story has it the Jim Belcher worked with Jeff on the design. When Jeff got out of the bow making business Jim purchased his equipment. Soon after, the Belcher Longhorn hit the market. I've owned several Massie Longhorns and I have always been facinated with Jeff's bow tips. They are truly a work of art. Most of his limbs were made with lam boo.

Phil/VA what are the laminations in your 66 inch bow? What weight arrows are you using?

Target, the bow is 57# @ my 28"draw. I shot 620 grain arrows. The lams are actionboo with carbon.

Hi,

I have two Jeff Massie Longhorn Longbows. The first one was built in 1999. The limb woods are Back-Bocote, Core-Osage Orange and Belly-Bocote. The Riser is Bocote. The specs are 55#@28", length is 64". Excellent shooter, so much so that I asked Jeff to build me a second Longhorn Longbow.

But, this time I left it up to Jeff to decide on the wood combinations. You can see the woods in my photos. This Longhorn came out at 56#@28" and the length is 64".
