First was with a round wheel compound. I shot it instinctive. With a flipper II rest and plunger using a 3 finger leather glove. 2018 Easton arrow with a razor back 5 broad head. First with a Bear Kodiak magnum recurve and fiberglass arrow tipped with a Bear razor head was the spike pictured.

I don't have a picture of my first deer which was a doe I shot with a 1969 45# Bear Green Fox bow in 1971. But I do have a picture of my second deer (and first buck) I shot with a 1963 or 1964 45# Black Hawk Warrior recurve in 1973. I'm the kid on the left.

Divorce took care of all my early pictures. It was a little spike that was sparing with a little 4pt. They fought under my stand. The spike made the mistake of standing still to long. Didn't think much of all my pictures back then. Now that I am older I wish I had those reminders of my memories.

One of the places I was stationed at as a U.S. Army military policeman was Aberdeen Proving Grounds. There were very strict rules to hunt there. There were some nice bucks running around on Aberdeen and the Edgewood Arsenal areas.

Frank, when were you there? Strict rules were the norm. We had to have a sponsor who was stationed there or worked there as a civilian. We had to take a safety course, then sign a waiver that the gov't wasn't responsible if you got blown up stepping of unexploded ordinance. Then we had to pass an equipment check and shooting test. We had to have our names written in paint between the fletching. You also had to hunt with your sponsor. The deer had big racks but not especially large bodies. I did kill a 3 legged deer once. We also duck hunted on post for years.

My first...Nov.5, 1968. I remember I made it home in time to vote in my first eligible election.
Back in those days it was a really big deal to shoot a deer with a bow and arrow. I was really proud of that little bugger!

My first year of bowhunting was in 1981. I was 23. Hunted 3 states that year. Colorado for elk, Missouri for deer and my home state of Iowa. I had never hunted big game before. Killed my first deer in Missouri, a button buck. Used a 50lb Bear Grizzly with aluminum arrow and Savona 3 blade head. I was pretty excited.

Been bowhunting 31 years, shot a bunch of deer with wheels but Sunday 12/4/2022 was my first deer since going traditional only in 2016. 10 yard shot from a ground blind, had my best friends during the recovery and the whole process which just magnified the whole experience for me

Frank (Nemo), I bought my lab in '83 and we sort of gravitated to duck and waterfowl by the time you were there. We body booted on the flats but did a lot of hunting out of my boat blind on the Proving Ground, Mosquito Creek, Carroll Island, Carpenters Point, The Narrows, etc.

I broke my nice custom bow just 3 days before my hunt in south Texas brush country.

My first deer, Western Nebraska on public land when I was 13. Shot him with a 44# browning wasp I borrowed from my grandfather (it was kind of the family floater/backup bow). My tapered ash shafts tipped with a zwickey eskimo zipped right through him while he was browsing in 2ft tall river bottom grass. He reacted to the sound of the arrow hitting the leaves but then just went back to grazing! I watched in disbelief as he went back to eating while blood spurted out of him for maybe 15 seconds or so till he started to stumble and fell over dead a mere 3 steps from where I shot him. I haven't seen anything like that happen after a shot since.

I wish I had a picture, but I don't think I even owned a camera back then. It was a doe, at about 3 yards from the base of the tree I was in. I was about 8 maybe 10ft high in a copy of the old Baker Climbing tree stand, which I had just built and hung in the tree, the day before.
I was shooting a Bear 60# Compound with a 2016 Easton Gamegetter arrow, tipped with a 3 bladed Wasp. The deer ran about 40 yards and I heard it crash, but out of sight, and I could have killed a second one, but I was worried about finding the first one, since it was out of sight. But I remember that I walked right to it. Easy find. I do remember that killing a deer with a bow was noteworthy back then, and I didn't personally know a single soul that had bagged one with a bow at that time.
