I wanna glue up a riser for a glass laminate bow. I was thinking of using titebond for the riser only since ea40 is so expensive.

Has anyone used titebond on a bow before putting it in the hot box?

Did it hold up ok?

I have ea40 for the limbs. This is for a Bingham projects straight limb longbow. Do you usually have a lot leftover? I had already glued up one and it had a slight gap so I wanna glue up another riser and I’m afraid of running out in the middle of gluing the limbs.

How much glue you have left over depends on how much you had to start with. They sell it in various quantities and you didn't say what your quantity was. We also don't know how many glue joints are going to be in your riser. Could be one. Could be several.

I would not put a riser in the oven if it was glued with Titebond. In fact I would not glue up a glass bow riser with Titebond to begin with. I like Smooth On EA40 for that.

Ahh I would not. What are you using to glue your laminations up underneath glass? So why not just order a pint kid of smooth on. That's what you need to use underneath your glass anyway and for laminations. Smooth on is what to use.JF

Use the smooth on for your riser also, you'll have plenty from a pint kit. You're only going to mix up. Maybe tops 7 to 8 oz, buttering both sides. When you glue it up. You'll have plenty. Use it on your riser layup also. Don't use tight bond. It won't hold up... JF

I have the 1/2 pint and 1/2 pint so one 1 pint total. 1 glue joint in the riser. I’ll just use the ea 40.

Thanks

Yeah the 7 to 9 oz is with 6 to 8 laminations counting glass. You should be fine. But yeah, don't use nothing but smooth on for blooming up risers. You don't have to cook your riser. But just make sure you cook your total bow glue up. It'll be fine. JF

Fyi, when I glue up a bow, say a d/r longbow with 6 lams including the glass, I use those little plastic 'Dixie cups' to measure parts A&B. I think they're 3 oz. Fill one cup with Part A, the other with Part B, then mix them together in a tuna fish can. That's more than enough to do any bow I ever made.

Don't skimp on that part

Don’t skimp on the glue. Let it ozz out of the joints. I learned the hard way when I attempted to build a longbow years ago. Bout the time I got it shootable it came apart where the glass comes into the riser.

My max is with two veneers and four core laminations. That's how I come with my 7-9 laminations of Ounces of glue. JF

I see Jeff D's suggestion appeared after I typed in. He is also correct. JF

Great question Cedarsavage and excellent replies .... I'm in EXACTLY the same position on a current horse bow project ... thanks all

I want to say TB3 lets go around 175 degrees. I wouldn't use it. That being said, TB gets a bad rap. Ive done plenty of "dont use that glue for that" projects that are still perfect. This wouldn't be one of those, however.

Cash, how far are you from Nelsons up there? You could get some Unibond from them without paying the crazy shipping costs.

Where’s Nelson’s? I just ordered another 1 pint setup from Bingham cuz I’ll use it eventually anyway and that way I don’t have to worry.

The Nelson Paint Co is in Kingsford.

Unibond is good stuff too.

Spend the money to get at least a pint kit of Smooth On. Why? Because soon as you finish this bow you’ll get an itch to build another…and another, ad nauseum. The stuff lasts forever in the can as long as it’s sealed tight and stored in a coolish place.

Kingsford is 2 hours I think. But distance is relative, and everything here is an hour or two. Good to know they're here.

I've been using Mas epoxy with a high strength adhesive filler (West System #404) to glue up my risers. No heat cure necessary. Richard
