Raining cats and dogs in SE Texas so it looks like I have time to do something I never have time for; my 68” Border longbow needs a new string.

As you can tell by the pic I shoot mainly red and yellow strings. I usta mix in black but that color smudges and doesn’t play well with others. However, The Border is black, and I need to use up some black, so I guess a black string it will be.

Getting the tools out and noticed my string wax is “Tex Tite”, which seems appropriate for me but makes me wonder what y’all use in other states.

Using the razor knife always makes me apprehensive, but how could I cut it wrong, ha ha. Guess I really shouldn’t laugh.

See what I mean about the smudge.

I also made a mistake more common than I previously realized. I forgot to change the pin in the jig that determines string length. Obviously the last string I built was for my 70” Hill Sirocco, good thing it has black glass. So now I have another string for a bow I never shoot, but on the bright side, it is still raining.

Yep, fits the Sirocco real nice; durn. Well I do have an over abundance of black D97. Starting to like the all black look.

I like the red, yellow, black combo my self.

Nice, that red, yellow, black is my favorite combo, or at least was before I got this roll of black.

Meanwhile, I’m back in business with a string that fits the Border. I was thinking it looks good till I saw Busted’s. That’s okay, I’m sticking to my plan with black serving.

FYI Phil Next time you can always untwist the last loop adjust your length 2" retwist then cut off the extra if you don't want to twist the extra back in. I usually take a measurement to where I start the second loop. >>>----> Ken

Thank Ken, my mistake because I work from the ends. Besides, it found a quick home on another bow. That's why it's good to have bows of different lengths.

I don't build strings often, so I try to make a few when I get started anyway.

Finished product. Served with mono (don’t tell me you don’t like mono, I already know I’m the only fan in the universe). Also, trying a mono nock locator for the first time. The red is the only color, l’ll use black 550 sheathing for silencers.

Thats a great looking serving!!! Your string is slick looking as well. I've never tried mono but i'll be looling for some now. Looks great.

Another pic of the tie-on. We’ll see if it lasts.

Mono lasts forever, unless it doesn’t, in which case it can unravel at about the speed of light. It’s slick to work with so I backserve 40 or more turns.

Strings look good. I use Ken's adjustment method whenever length is off more than I want to add or remove twists.

awesome looking strings. for some reason, mine always look like a one eyed blind guy with no feeling in his fingers made it. they never look like that and are barely serviceable. You guys make them look so easy and nice.

I do use mono on my Mitchell 300. :)

Good for you GDS.

Mono is amazing stuff but I would never recommend it’s use.

Excellent!!! I too LOVE mono servings. Never had one blow, no not one. Got one last spool of Brownells .021. What mono are you using?

From: Bob Rowlands
Date: 21-Mar-23

Phil, I use Textite. Thanks for the photos!

From: Lenny

I’ve used mono serving for years with no problem!

From: felipe
Date: 22-Mar-23

The nock set is 17#, first time I tried mono for a nock set. My string serving is 30# I think. The servings do last forever; nice release too.

From: Old3Toe
Date: 22-Mar-23

Do you get serving friendly spools somewhere, or what’s your process for back-winding it onto an empty spool?

From: N Y Yankee
Date: 22-Mar-23

Ive made a couple of strings that came out the wrong length and couldnt use them on another bow. I gave them away on this site. guys were happy to get them. I try to pay attention more now. so far, so good.

Guys, if you dont know who Clay Hayes is, he is a big selfbow maker and bow hunter out in the mid-west. He has many videos on making a selfbow, strings, wood cane and carbon arrows and hunting all over the country. He likes to use fishing line to serve his strings, so there's that.

I have bought servers with the mono, last was at Academy Sports, but can’t find them now. Probably because archers developed mono hatred LOL. They were a product from Bayou Archery.
