How do you like your bows, plain or fancy? Solid color riser or fancy stripes? Fancy lams or colored glass? Maybe painted or dipped? Solids for me or painted.

Old style.

Not to fancy, by today's standards

From: George D. Stout

Plain or fancy doesn't affect the shooting qualities, so if it fits me, I'll use it. Real beauty is in the way it shoots for you.

A friend said " hunting with an ugly bow is like taking your sister to the prom". But I like fancy wood but it doesn't matter as long as I can hit with it.

From: M60gunner
Date: 22-Sep-22

Both, but I know a deer would be proud to be shot with a “pretty “ bow.

From: Phil Magistro

Fancy wood looks nice and I spent a lot of time and money on fancy. As I aged I realized that some designs are attractive to me. It doesn’t have to have multiple lams of fancy woods anymore. Just nice lines and a good fit for me.

I like them plain. Nice woods but plain.

Heres mine. Limbs are black glass.

From: Tethered Falcon
Date: 22-Sep-22

Plain. They are tools, the nicer the bow the less I want to hunt with it.

From: fdp

Both...

Plain and simple. Maple laminations, and green glass

I like these.

I'm a sucker for bows with lots of grain detail. So I guess I like them a little fancy. BUT I also think one can get to carried away and then I'm done. If your getting one made, the fancy woods don't cost much more. You should have one you like to look at as well as shoot.

The pretty wood of traditional bows is one of the reason I came back to traditional archery.

From: Iwander
Date: 23-Sep-22

I regard my favorite bow pretty much the same as my favorite hammer. Highly on function over looks.

From: MattS
Date: 23-Sep-22

I do like to look and hold the pretty ones but when I'm shooting it doesn't matter.

From: soldier

My bows need to be Purdy like me !!!!!

From: kaw369
Date: 23-Sep-22

It is all about accessories. LOL But I do like just Osage.

From: RonP
Date: 23-Sep-22

definitely plain. an accent stripe is OK, but plain it is. have/had a lot of bows with just black or brown glass.

in a bow, i do not like footed rises, gaudy overlays, split veneers, 'busy' wood grain, etc.

From: Live2Hunt
Date: 23-Sep-22

Now we all know you need to look good out in the woods, so I like a classy looking wood bow that shoots well. It's better to look good than to feel good!!!

From: Missouribreaks
Date: 23-Sep-22

I have both, but prefer osage selfbows which are far from fancy.

From: Yellah Nocks
Date: 23-Sep-22

Live to hunt...you are the Archery Continental(LOL, I got the reference).

But, my opinion is that simple IS fancy, or at least pretty. Especially since I am going to dull it down with clear flat matte or flat paint. Yup. I am one of "them" painting kinda guys.

I wanted this one drab and ugly.

David, now with that bottom bow in the woods, you would looka marvelous!!!!

Most of mine are about average in the look's department.I do prefer fancy.

From: Yellah Nocks

Nah! I vote for that "cameoflajjie" he dipped it in.

I remember when I first discovered that custom bows were A Thing, I spent a lot of time mooning over the pictures in the ads in TBM, wondering what combinations I would like best for The Ultimate Bow.

Since then, I have acquired three custom bows, none of which were built for me, but to someone else’s specifications. There is a fourth bow on the rack which may or may not have been ordered as a custom job; it was a gift for my son and just somehow miraculously happened to become available not so long after I had mentioned the exact combination of woods on a thread about “what would you get if” thread. Only the bowyer knows for sure.

I won’t lie. I love the look of clear glass over a veneer with nice grain to it (as long as the glass stays clear!) & I don’t really think there is any fancy combination of woods that is as beautiful as a really nicely figured piece of wood such as you see on a fancy Claro walnut gunstock. So basically, it’s (just a personal preference!) sort of like seeing a superbly conditioned female athlete with a gorgeous physique all cluttered up with tattoos. Actually, the same thing applies to male athletes, but I wanted you guys focused on the quality of the lines, and not getting all weird on me.

So yes, there is one of these risers which is a bit busier than I would ever have chosen if I were starting from scratch, but the performance and poundage are exactly what I really, truly wanted, so if it’s a bit of a hot-rod, so be it. It’s a hot-rod and sometimes they have flames on the hood.

But like they say: There’s a good reason that you never see a bumper sticker on her Ferrari

"David, now with that bottom bow in the woods, you would looka marvelous!!!!"

That is one serious piece of Brazilian Rosewood in the Howatt, it gives you something to look at when the hunting is slow.

The dipped bow is a Galaxy Ember LB, work done by Randy Hoffer in Wisconsin.

From: JusPassin
Date: 23-Sep-22

No question that they can be both, however I have at least one that is too nice to bounce around the woods with. I have to say I am most concerned with performance over looks.

From: BigB Compton's Traditional Bowhunters

Most of mine are what I think are pretty woods but not a lot of extras.

From: Gofish
Date: 23-Sep-22

Mine are kind of plain i get black glass and some kind of red riser along with red accents on the tips and red overlays on the black glass on the riser

Life is too short to shoot ugly weapons.

Both.

From: pipcount
Date: 23-Sep-22

I like pretty, but not so much so that I feel unwilling to shoot for fear of damaging a beauty.

Sold my Blacktail Elite VL T2 for that reason.

My Wing Preso II wood handles are quite an eyecatcher.

From: dnovo Professional Bowhunters Society - Qualified Member Compton's Traditional Bowhunters
Date: 23-Sep-22

I like a bow with some nice looking woods in it and some good detail work. That what I have now and it’s a great shooter.

Good shooting bow is most important but it doesn’t have to be ugly.

From: HEXX

I just put copper head Limbsations on my new KBV for camo, but now I would have to

say FANCY !

From: B.T.
Date: 23-Sep-22

I like both, from factory camo old Bear Grizzly's to fancy wood custom bows...even ILF metal riser bows and vintage metal riser take downs.

From: Jeff Durnell
Date: 23-Sep-22

My favorite bows are plain, sorta. They may hold a little wow factor for some folks when they get near them and touch them, but I doubt anyone would call them fancy. More of a subtle beauty due to fit & finish and sexy flowing lines. Not just a conglomerate of separate, distinguishable parts. No corners, edges, or flats, can't get there with glass. Harder to explain than to make the dang things :^)

From: Bigdog 21
Date: 23-Sep-22

Fancy are plain Doesn't matter to me as long as it's grey or Osage.

From: Jeff Durnell
Date: 23-Sep-22

Osage is ok I guess :)

From: Papadeerhtr

Bows are like women, they will all shoot arrows. I just prefer to hold and look at pretty ones!
