I grew up giving my weapons a name, it was what my uncles and grandfather did. I had an old Martin that I had called "Bad News", a longbow years ago that I called "Quiet Death." My 40 # Bendy bow shot so well when I first made it last year that I inscribed on it "Deer Slayer." Now it has to live up to it's name but I am sure that it will. Back in the 70's I had given one of my uncles a 58 cal Musket to deer hunt with and he called it "Thumper" because it thumped at both ends. He gave it back to me earlier this year with 14 furniture tacks in the main stock, each one for a buck killed with it. It is a very cherished item and on the wall for all to see. Jerry

I usually don't name them, but my old heavy draw Martin Firecat is named "Monster Shooter" (Monster for short), and my new Backwoods Composites ILF is named "Werewolf".

All the others are just called "This Bow", or "That Bow".

Named some of the kids, a few cats, all the dogs, and a passel of horses, but never a bow. Not that I'm not passionate about my longbows, but I just call them by the bowyer's or company name.

I named a cherry glass bow after my Irish Setter, Brandy. I cut the cherry tree from the edge of the woods we used as our playground. Used to be a lot of grouse in there. She's been gone over 30 years, still have the bow... and the memories.

Tom Clum (Rocky Mountain Specialty Gear) calls my ILF bow “Old Soulless.”

Some of my bows are named for Rockabilly musicians. My all black bow is Johnny Cash. My hunting bow is Jerry Lee (Lewis aka The Killer). My sweet shooting longbow is Roy (Orbison). Others are named for rock, blues, and folk musicians. My 58” Bear 76er is Little Richard. My ILF form bow is Howlin’ Wolf. I call my 3 kids bows Peter, Paul, & Mary. My vintage Wilson Bros bow was Pete (Seeger). I had a Frankenbow that I called Chuck (Berry)

I gave away a longbow that always shot high. It was named Bob (Marley).

Ol' Buck, named after my father-in-law out of respect for that awesome man.

I think all selfbows should be named, mine is Sprit Dancer, named by the man who built it. Most laminated bows already have names.

The bow I have been using the last 15 years had “snakebite” on it when I got it. And it must have been fairly old when it got to me so I just call it snakebite

From: Saxbow

My 7 lakes longbow "BamBam" is gone and so is the Gary Sentman longbow "Lightening". But now I have a new BigJim Buffalo named "Featherweight". Why? Because it's smooth on the draw, actual physical bow is lite, draw weight is very manageable for all day shooting and it shoots a very quick arrow. It's just like a good Featherweight fighter, lite and quick to strike.

Where I’m from we name everything. Tractors, trucks, cars, boats, guns you name it and we’re going to give it a name.

When it comes to my bows. I’m like Jeff. I usually develop a relationship with my selfbows when I’m bringing them to life. They usually tell me there name somewhere through the process. Sometimes it’s subtle and sometimes it screams it at me.

Named one "Swamp Thing" once, I got yelled at on the Leatherwall for criticizing a Bowers work. I just thought it was cool looking like the creature on the movie. So no more names, it's not allowed.

My Fox... My Toelke... but... that's not the same as naming them.

Generally no I don't name them. The year I had the heart attack the doc said no work for 3 months...he said nothing about no hunting....I killed 14 deer with a bow that season and my son started referring to the bow as killer. I Also have a 45 muzzleloader that's referred to as killer...

When I'm inspired by something, I will name a bow but never write the name on the bow. I had a Jeffrey Royal Hunter that Owen custom- made for a fellow who was a state champion in Texas and took several record book trophies with it. I stopped by the shop and talked with Owen about it. I named that one 'Jefe' and later sold it to a now-gone LWer. I have a 1961 Wilson Bros black and white TF, 68", I named 'Holly Golightly' after another gal with that glamourous look from 1961. I had a lefty 1961 Kodiak Special, 63" and 63# at my draw, that I named 'Avni' after the famous man-eating lioness in India. She looked like a tigress and gnawed on my left shoulder every time I shot her until I passed her along to a braver soul. Now I have another 63" 1961 KS, in the pic, that is 52# and she is 'Sugarpuss O'Shea'. Old guys will know who that is.

From: Jason316

I kinda call mine what they are, Satori, Epic, Black Hunter, SuperK, etc. But I have 2 I've named. Thor and Zeus. Thor is a 70# Martin Lynx recurve. One of the first trad bows I got. Yes, I know to go light and I did but I wanted a workout bow to help build strength and a guy local was selling it for $50. Couldn't pass it up. Then Zeus came along. She's an 83# ASL longbow that was gifted to me by a guy on Trad Talk. Not really sure who made the 83# and being it was the tank of my collection, it got the deserving name. lol
