Style pocket knife. This knife was Designed for the trapper for skinning muskrat & another small game. This is a true classic. The muskrat pocket knife with two identical blades. Just curious. Is there any other Leatherwaller’s that are fans of the muskrat style pocket knife. Let’s see some pictures of your muskrats! And tell us why you like this classic pocket knife.

I have a Buck muskrat. I like the knife for it's purpose. I used it when trapping coyotes and was use a lot during those days. Now it is on ice. Got it from my son so will keep it around. I carry a Case stockman. I like the three blades.

Yep, lots of muskrat knife fans in the forum! I'll post mine when I'm back at the computer.

Muskrat love, nice knife

I like em a lot. I have about ten or twelve of various brands. My first one was a Kutmaster that I got at the Pa Trappers Rendezvous 40 years ago when I was 16. I still have it and use it. It has a quite narrow blade, even for a muskrat. I works good for skiving leather for bow grips and arrow plates. Carbon steel blade, gets and stays sharp.

Muskrats are nimble little blades and work good for field dressing and skinning small critters, especially when working around the eyes, lips, ears, toes, tails, thinning portions of hides. or whatever. Yep, love me some muskrats.

Camillus 714. Love the steel in the old Camillus NY knives!

Here's a couple Don. The top one is a Queen that was rode hard and put away wet too many times when I got it. I gave it some TLC and it's in pretty decent shape now. Might polish it a little more.

The bottom right is a Kutmaster Muskrat made in Utica NY. One of my favorites.

The one on the left is also a Kutmaster, but I'm not sure what style it is. It has a muskrat type/California clip blade on the left and a standard clip blade on the right. Otherwise, it's identical to the Muskrat knife to its right. Never saw one before so I grabbed it.

Every one of the few trappers I knew growing up had one—the old mentors, government trappers and the kids like me. The only knife for small fur bearers. Now days I carry a stockman.

Dem iz PURTY KNIVES!

From: Jeff Durnell

Most muskrats have two of the same style blade but I think those with different shaped blades can still be muskrats because I've seen them deemed so by the manufacturers when the second blade is clip, spey, sheepsfoot, etc.

My current Old Timer muskrat.

I skinned a pile of coons by miner's head light and a lot of animals form the trap line with a knife like this when I was a kid.

This one rides in my pocket daily.

Great knives all, keep em coming!

From: Jeff Durnell
Date: 08-Sep-22

Yep me too Jim, skinned a pile of critters with mine. Perfect for furbearers and good for small game, filleting panfish, skinning turtles, and more. And like you said, good to carry just because.

I just got a notice... package delivered this morning. It's another muskrat. Anxious to get home :^)

Here's my old ratty Rat. Got it when I was a kid. Needs a little tlc. Worked on so many furbearers, small game, fish, almost every bow I've made. I should be buried with this thing :^)

Jeff, the new Queen is a beauty but I'm partial to the old ratty Rat myself.

Something pretty about a well used, worn tool in my opinion.

I just checked my knife photo (easier than actually checking the knives) and all of mine are the trapper design, not the muskrat. I liked the trapper for the spey blade, a good skinning blade.

skinned a lot of muskrats/coons/foxes and coyotes with them back in the late 1970s to early 90s, theres a few around Indiana stuck in the ground in the woods from squirrel hunting..had a bad habit of sticking them in ground when putting stick thru their leg to carry them.

Here's a couple more muskrats I've acquired. The smaller is a standard 4" size Schatt & Morgan muskrat. My new favorite. The larger is an AG Russell jumbo muskrat and is 5 1/2" long. They call it a muskrat, but it's freakin huge and has two slightly different blades, a standard clip point, and a California clip.

Don, I'm curious as to the size of your cracked ice AG Russell muskrat? I didn't notice before how big it looks in your hand. How long is it? The jumbo in this picture is the only muskrat I have that's anything other than 4"... give or take. I knew of mini muskrats, but never saw a jumbo before.

From: Jeff Durnell
Date: 08-May-23

Jeff Durnell's embedded Photo

At 5 1/2", it's bigger than most large folding hunters.

From: Jeff Durnell
Date: 08-May-23

By the way, most muskrats have two identical blades but apparently it isnt a strict defining characteristic cuz I've seen plenty with one clip point paired with a spey, drop, warncliff, etc. Most of them though do have two long clip point blades.

My AG Russell at the top is 4” long Jeff. They make a quality knife.

I've had this one since the 70's. It's skinned tons of squirrels, rabbits, foxes, coyotes, coons, opposums, mink and of course muskats. Extremely sharp and holds its edge.

From: Don T Lewis
Date: 28-May-23

All knives welcome anytime Harry. All 3 of those are beauties. I really like the scales on the one in the center. And those nail nicks are really unique. Never seen them like that before. Who’s the maker of the one in the middle? Very nice muskrats Harry.

From: Don T Lewis
Date: 28-May-23

Of course both of those Case muskrats are sweet too.

From: Jeff Durnell
Date: 29-May-23

Don, those nail nicks with little teeth in them are for lighting matchsticks... called match strike nail nicks.

The old Remington muskrat I posted has one smooth nail nick and the other blade is a match striker.

Here’s an old Kutmaster from Utica NY. At one time the blades were identical but as you can see, this knife has been loved. I pretty much found it this way at a thrift store for a buck years ago. I just cleaned off the rust and sharpened what’s left of the blades. I used the longer of the two blades for a leather punch for awhile. Lance

Cool thanks Jeff. I learned something today;)

From: reddogge

Yes, me too on the serrated nail nicks. I thought they were fingernail files:(

From: Harry

The knife in the center is a bulldog, made in Germany. I never knew about the match striker nail nicks either..thanks Harry
