The movie Prey, starring Amber Midthunder, shows all the folks shooting a bow with what I would consider their string hand upside down. Now I know there are multiple ways to skin a cat , but I've never heard of or seen this method. Has anyone else seen this style or is this Hollywood doing it's usual?

Ever pull your hand away from your face?

Plus, how do you get good alignment with the string so far from your eye?

It would be like shooting a rifle with your eye off to one side ofthe stock…..

Take a look at the publication Ancient and Modern Methods of Arrow Release along with the updated edition. Both by Edward Morse.

Several release methods recorded that don't allow for achieving the current version of "good alignment"

Archery has been around a long time and wasn't invented here.

I've never seen documentation of that hold/release being used in North America.

Wasn’t that the same hold in Avitar if memory serves me right ?

I think it was.

Hmmmmmm might be fun to try with a split two finger draw.

Different for sure.

BTW, this thread may get closed like my John Wick 4 thread about archery.

I met an ALABAMA-COUSHATTA Indian years ago. He was making stone points, of course we started talking archery. He actually held the nock with his thumb and index finger while drawing his bow.

Looks like the same ways this lady is shooting

My STAR releases can be shot inverted. Not necessary and not my favorite method. However it may help cure target panic - at least getting back to a solid anchor. Why? Because it kills the impulse to release before anchor. But, there is a better way...

She is so fast i can't see exactly how she is gripping it.

Many of the NA shooters used a bulbous nock to facilitate a thumb fore finger grip.

She's not that accurate, but I wouldn't want to be dodging the multitude of arrows. Good method for shooting at enemies in a formation.

It was used in the movie 'Dragon Blade" too Here is another archer from Murmansk

PS My bad, the archer above is not from Murmansk, the girl is.

David, the proper way to shoot at massed enemies is to have eight hundred stout hearted lads at your side, all well practiced with cloth-yard shafts ;-)

I'll say Prey was a good movie if you are into the Predator movies. I watched it the other night with my son.

Don't know about the historical accuracy of the bow string hold.

I completely forget about the speed shooter gal. I would think if I tried that method ,my fingers would roll the string to where the arrow would come off the shelf. But she's doing it quite proficiently.

The movie is about an alien being from outer space that comes to early America and preys on the Native American population - and you are concerned about the how authentic the archers release is? lol

If you are going to concern yourself with that, why does the movie has Comanche Indians fighting this alien in the Rocky Mountains.

I did enjoy the movie though.

I'm a big Predator fan. Classic movie. I enjoyed Prey.

Ishi had a real unusual draw

Thanks Buckeye, Great movie :)

Hmmm...that inverted-hand technique would allow me to shoot a left-handed bow, since the string would roll off the fingers 180º from the way it normally does. I might have to try it!

Ergonomically it doesn't seem that weird. Of course it still seems weird, but, lots of ways to skin a cat.
