Same bow, same draw length, same arrows and points - what type of shooting form difference(s) make you need a weeker or stiffer spine? I ask because I sold a 45# Bob Lee recurve to a friend and we both draw around 28". I shot 500 spine arrows out of it good and he says he needs 340 spine.

Grip position in hand, quality of loose/release, and attention to tuning.

Rick nailed it. Grip is a huge factor in spine. Even Tom Clum wrote about grip and the need of stiffer spined shafts.

Okie -

Differences in release and or bow torque can, but don't confuse spine requirements with shooting flaws that give false readings. If your friend needs a 340 spine from a 45# bow, those arrows had better be very long, have a lot of head weight, or both, or more likely he's getting a false reading.

Viper out.

So, do you think my grip is causing me to need below average spine or is his grip causing the need for above average spine? Or a little of both?

Give him a bare shaft in 340 and first shot will settle differences really quickly. I bet you 340 is way too stiff for that weight/draw.

So how does it differ with different grips? Just curious. I seem to always need an arrow a little weaker than a spine calculator dictates.

A lot of responses at once but I think my question above was answered as I was thinking 340 was way too stiff. However, like PA Steve I tend to do best with weeker spine than what the charts call for.

What type of grip or shooting flaw would cause him to need more spine?

Sorry Okie, wasn't trying to hijack thread just figured if someone could answer my question it would be relevant to your initial inquiry.

No problem Steve, I took it as along the same line. Of course I think my friend must be doing something wrong. LOL But anymore I don't even bother looking at the charts.

Not sure but with a 45# bow I need a heavy head and a 500 spine with a 29" arrow.

A .340 is statically the equivalent of a 92lb. wood shaft. So there is that.
