Messing around with my sons Chronograph. All bows shooting same arrow 400 spine at 411 Grains. Pulled to my 27 inch draw. Chad Holm River Runner 56" 43@28 fast flight string 158 FPS Treadway Reflex/Deflex Longbow 60" 46@28 fast flight string 157 FPS Ben Pearson Rogue 58" 40@28 Dracon string 156 FPS

I got the Rogue for shooting fish and it has been abused. Finish is totally wore off the handle. I hate the feel of the thick handle but dang I shoot it quite well. Never shot it much because I thought I was giving up too much speed with lower draw weight and non fast flight string.

That’s pretty good that the old-timer is keeping up. Maybe those Old Dudes knew their apples after all??

Question for you -

Are you shooting those 400s full length?

Reason I’m asking is that I shoot 500s and 600s cut to 27 3/4” with 200 grain and 175 points (respectively) from bows in the high 40s and low 50s. If you’re shooting fulL- length, you may be able to get away with it. For me, those things would be flying sideways at 10 yards, bare shaft.

And for target work, if you were to cut down into the 8.5-9 GPP range, you might be able to flatten those trajectories a fair bit. And for deer in most places, I would not feel under-gunned at that rate…

Dunno about the age of the other bows, but the Rogue is a mid-70s made bow - with George Birnie's "hyperkinetic" limbs! ;-)

No surprise to me.

Made a mistake. Arrow was actually Full length American Victory 500 spine with a 175 Grain tip. These seem to shoot well from all my low to mid 40 pound bows. I tried 100 Grain tips for 3D shooting and was getting close to 180 FPS. Arrow flight was really not bad.Bow noise was a bit worse. Hunting with ACE express 175 grain this year so want to practice with arrows close to my hunting weight.

I remember the old magazine ads about the Rogue, "Buck quick and cat quiet"....wish I could find another one. I shot mine pretty good too. I shot it with fast flight string for years. Riser and grip were a little thick for me too, but that mass might have contributed to it being a quiet shooter.

I once had a similar experience with an old bear grizzly. The bow out performed my expectations of it.

Don't believe a full length 500 spine with a 175 grain tip is way too stiff at mid 40 pounds. Been hunting with 400 spine full length with 150 grain woodsman heads and have had exit wounds on 17 out of 19 deer shot. Not all were perfect broadside thru ribs. I do believe the 400's are a bit too stiff though.

I have a 1969 Kodiak Hunter with the B stamp. That bow has tips so small I need to use a longbow string on it. Fast bow... It is #40 and loves a 500 spine, 30" arrow, 125-145 tips, drawn to 29".

I would say they have fiberglass on them as well.
