Cortisone masks the pain. Often, the patient ends up doing greater damage because, "wow, feels GREAT, musta just been a glitch...".So they overdo when they should LIGHTLY exercise or rest. It is fine to tide you over or through the wait for surgery. Be careful. Despite ENORMOUS damage to both shoulders I refuse cortisone, preferring to use light archery as therapy. 40 years pst op now. But each person is different. Please be prudent so you can keep an active life as an archer.

Had one and it only lasted about 6 weeks. You should get an mri and see just exactly what your dealing with. Some things can get better with just rest and physical therapy. Others may need surgery to correct.

A lot of Doctors won't operate until you try the shots unless their is a lot of damage. Most Doctors will order MRI's and X-rays before they do anything.

Most cortisone injections come with a local anesthetic for immediate relief which can make careless individuals over do the joint relieved. I had the lower back injected for a blown disc and it was just short of a miracle in relief and return to life in the construction industry involving a fair amount of daily heavy lifting,,,,,,,that was 20 years ago.

I had two after I had rotator repair. First one lasted couple months. Second one lasted a couple days. So cortisone does not work for me. I also had one in my knee but I told him that it probably wouldn't work. It did absolutely nothing for me. JF

I got them in my knee when I wrestled and then when I kick boxed up until I was about 30.
As mentioned above they are only a temporary fix, mask the pain, not a long term solution in my opinion.
I was lucky that I didn't do more harm than good but they did keep me able to fight.
I hope you find a good, permanent, Dr recommended solution.

I had shots in my shoulder after I dislocated it in high school. It never did come back completely, but it does what I need it to do. It took a few years before I was able to reach straight up in the air. When I was in my late 50's, I got a couple shots in both knees. Knees are good, which I don't quite understand just why they're doing well now. As others have said, it's only a temporary solution which could cause more harm than good. I hobbled into the clinic and could have danced out. What a difference!

I have and had immediate relief. The shot has lidocaine and steroid mix. the lidocaine gives fast relief until the steroid kicks in. It gave me a lot of help.

I am 67 and get shots in both shoulders every 6 months as Doctor's said they both need to be replaced due to shoulder impingement(socket). They last about 4 months and the pain starts to come back. I suck it up and stick to the 6 month appointment using Voltaren arthritis cream at night when the pain wakes me up (side sleeper shoulder to shoulder toss and turn) and sleep in a recliner to take pressure off shoulders then back to bed when real sleepy again. I do a light weight workout at gym(nothing over head) for bow shooting and swim a 1/4 mile with a modified stroke keeping one arm under water. Then hit the hot tub with jets on shoulders. As far as shoulder use when I have a big day doing yard work I may have to take 800 mg of Ibuprofen to ease the pain at night. Definitely see a Doctor(X-Rays MRI) to find out what damage you have first and get opinion on weather shots would work for you. I have been doing this for the last 4-5 years. Good luck.

Years ago I had a cortisone shot in my shoulder....yes it helped. Now if you just go back to doing what you were doing without letting it heal- bad idea.
I had shoulder pain in my rotator and I highly recommend talking to a PT. They cured mine. Its a long story but the PT identified what I was doing to impinge on my rotator...gave me instruction on how not to affect it...and gave me exercises with bands that help build up the muscles around the joint.
Go see a good PT before you do anything....

Yes, don't do more than 2 and quit shooting for 90 days minimum 120 is better. Most PT you can do at home. There are some PTs that post here that will give good advice, so search the forum history.

For 3 years...2014-2016, I had shots in both knees. First time they helped for about 6 months, but then the effectiveness wore off and the frequency of the shots increased to every 3 months. In late 2016 I had a double knee replacement, and all is good. Had a shot in my right (bow shoulder as I am a lefty) in late February and while I'm not totally without pain, I can at least shoot my bow. My surgeon tells me the only other option is a total replacement of the right shoulder. I have no cartilage left. He has given me exercises and stretches to do on a daily basis. I'll be 67 in October, and he wants to put off the replacement as long as possible. I'm good with that! Good luck!>>>--------->

I have 1 complete tear and three partial tears of the ligaments in my left, bow arm shoulder. I asked the surgeon who is a friend of mine if I am going to do anymore damage to the shoulder if I continue to use it. He said as long as you can take the pain you can do what you want, the damage is already done. Mine was injured when I was throwing mounted truck tires into the back of a truck. One bounced and came back at me and I instinctively reached up to catch it and push it back into the truck with my left arm only. Big mistake, it took my arm straight back over my shoulder as my body was moving forward into the push. I new immediately I had an injury but thought rest would clear it up but it won't. I am getting injections every 4 to 6 months and it helps a lot but I will eventually need to get the surgery. Currently dealing with other family member health issue that take priority over the shoulder. I can still shoot I just have to be conscious of no sudden movements with bow arm and bring the bow to target from the bottom up. Not drawing heavy weights anymore put still enjoying the flight of the arrow. I would definitely recommend the shots. I had issue before without torn ligaments and the shots restored me completely, they just won't rebuild torn tendons. Good Day

The hanging thread was posted by Monkeyball so just search his posts. I got a shot in my shoulder and when I went back to the therapist two days later I told her I felt stupid even coming in because my shoulder felt great. She told me to give it a few days and see how it feels. By my next appointment I could not lift my arm above eye level. After the surgery the surgeon told me one tendon was completely detached and two others were torn. The shot may help if you have a strain and no damage but if it is detached like mine was it will only mask the problem.

Went through it in my right shoulder. I’m now 2 surgeries down in that shoulder and am strong as ever in it. If you need shots it’s prob time for surgery. My first injury was sport related and my second one was ego related. My opinion is find out how bad she is and if doc says surgery do it soon and get it over with. You’re lookin at 8 months recovering

My doctor told me that he wouldn’t give cortisone shots until he had an MRI because shots wouldn’t really do any good if I had any real damage. Turns out I have real damage, so I get surgery instead of steroid shots. Sounds like the next 2-3 months after surgery kind of suck. However, after talking to people that had similar surgery, they said “But now my shoulder works!” So there’s that!
Bottom line, just talk to your Doctor. He is the expert, we’re just random internet dudes. Lol

I had three or four about 8-12 months apart. I finally found a good PT with alot of experience in sport injuries.
She gave me series of stretches and exercises that after a relatively short amount of time produced the kind of results I wanted. But it will be an ongoing problem that you need to keep doing.

I've had a broken knee cap for the last 23 years. It still has the wire wrapped around it that was put there in 2009. It is now bone on bone but doc wants to wait as long as possible to replace it so that I can get by with only one replacement . I've been getting steroid shots in it for the last few years and I do whatever I want pain free until the shot wears off and they give me another.

Like most "fixes" it works fantastic for some, not so much for others. Personally, it cured me. I got a shot after putting up with a pain for a couple months. It just wouldn't go away so I got a shot. Worked quickly and effectively and has not bothered me since, so I have to say you need to at least try it...it wont make you worse. I mean, what do you have to loose??? Also I will say that you hear stories about how terrible the shot hurts too and I have to say I didn't even feel it. Best of luck!!!!
