From: fdp
Date: 27-Jul-22

I've put as many as 4 or more. But I think 2 is plenty.

I dip mine with 4 coats of exterior oil based poly urethane.

From: Greenstyk

From: Bootaka

I do 3. Coat, cap coat, crest coat. That way if I mess up and/or want to redo my crests.

I've been using a Minwax water based product called "Polycrylic" protective finish, a clear satin, fast drying, and easy water clean up. 3 or 4 coats seens to work well. You may want to make sure that it is compatible with the stain that you use.

I think 3 is good, and I have done 3, but lately i just get lazy and do 2 with a foam brush. If I were to use spray, Id do 3-4.

Wow, I guess I'm the only one who cuts the lacquer 50/50 and just does one dip. Well alrighty then. :)

2 full length and 1 more on the business end.

From: buddyb
Date: 27-Jul-22

I used to full length dip twice sanding between coats.

The more coats I put on is directly proportional to the likelihood that I will destroy that arrow on the first shot!

I wipe on poly till I'm tired of wiping it on; I'm usually good for about 8 coats. I will light sand maybe a couple of times during the process. two days of wiping...

Four. Lightly steel wool between coats. I like poly. I like tung oil better.

Does Tung oil take long to dry?

From: Deno

Two max for me

I like Danish Oil for arrows as well.

From: Longcruise

I use 3 or 4 coats of wipe on. Sometimes water based and sometimes oil based. It takes a while but it's quick to apply. Most of the time is waiting for it to dry and there's no need to watch paint dry! :^)

When I have a nice set and I'm feeling the need. I spray mine with some gloss epoxy from Big Jim's. I spray them when they're turning on my cresting lathe with an airbrush. They turn out freaking awesome. But that's only one I feel the need. JF

Tung oil dries really fast. A lot faster than oil based poly.

From: Nemah
Date: 28-Jul-22

Oil based Minwax poly thinned with paint thinner...two coats....one by the nock end and one by the point end. I let the first coat dry for two or more days, then steel wool or Scotch Brite lightly before dipping the second coat. RKK
