I was just wondering who here makes Turkish style flight arrows.I just made two. These have traditional style knocks with two ears glued on with a binding. On one arrow I also fitted a ivory spline before putting on the bone ears.Traditionally the knocks were bound with sinew.Mine are done with poly cotton. This was recessed into the knock and shaft.I filled the binding with CA glue and blended it with the shaft diameter. This gave me smooth finish to Fletch over. The points were turned up from brass and have a short 3/4" long tang. These are bound with a flush finish as well. The rest of the arrow is footed Douglas fir and Silky oak.I chose the classic barreled torpedo shape. These arrows have a fine FOC.They theoretically should float ang glide to increase the distance traveled.I will be going on to the beach near home Hoping for About 350 MTRS or more from 50# and a 60,# respectively.lets see yours. I turned ranged brass points and wrapped the shaft in poly cotton for about 1 1/4" The binding is recessed to remain flush. With the shaft .My next arrow I am attempting is going to be segmented and glued around a wire mandril .Once removed it should make a hollow shaft. Some old Ottomon texts mention that it was done in the past.Allan Case is renowned for using bamboo segmented arrows.I think Larry Hatfield may have used one of Allan's arrows in his record flight shoots Osr

Richard ... lovely arrows I'd like to ask, I've seen in Ottoman arrows that the fletchings are set right back almost on the nock. What do you think is the benefit of them being so far back?

Apparently the feathers further back are susposed to stablize the arrow better in flight. The jury is still out on that one though as some flight shooters beg to differ.I put my feathers further forward as my thumb shooting is on hold for a while with arthritis.By me putting my feathers further forward it facilitates mediteranian draw easier.I once made a statement that the likes of Purle and Thompson were probably the best wood arrow makers and took arrow making to its very best.I am revising that.Yes they possibably made the best target arrows there is.I now have as much respect for the Turks as well as their arrows are quite a bit more technical in their design and methods required to build them.I have yet to build their hollow segmented arrows over a wire removable mandril.Alan Case builds a good arrow but I think he uses heat treated Tonkin bamboo strips and 6 segments.I hope to use some real stiff Douglas fir.I really hate planing the strips because the jig used to plane fine strips takes nearly as long to make as the shafts do.No machines ,all hand work. I saw where Kay was selling some older flight arrows the other day...she says that they are 1/8" diameter with razor blade fletching....the "big" arrow is a normal 4" fletch arrow as a comparison.

Yeah 3mm carbon and razor blades.Too high tech for me.I shoot my flight arrows over the hand.Even if I used a siper I would not be stupid enough to try those.I would be in fear of receiving significant body injury.I bet they shoot pretty good distances though. Was It Alan Case put an arrow through his foot with a foot bow?.I could have the wrong person. It don't matter it doesn't sound too good to me.Thanks for posting all the same.
