I picked up a nice old Fasco recurve that is stamped 7116. Can anybody tell me about the model or the year off this number? Steve

I also send an email to Jim Baker (jaz). Haven't heard from him for a while I hope he's ok.

I'm thinking this might be the phantom model but I'm not really sure.

Nice looking bow Steve. I'm sure either Jim or Fred, our own "skookum" will be along and fill us in. Fred used to work there and maybe he worked on that one?

From: Downcanyon

Thanks, whoever built these bows must have been one heck of a good limb lineup guy. Those parallel laminations and super thin tips would have drove in a lot of guys nuts.

From: Downcanyon

Nice looking bow, bet she's a sweet shooter, too. Guessing by looks of the sight window it's a longer bow? 66" ?

Steve

It is a 66, but requires a string slightly longer than my 66 Brackenbury Legend. I got it in San Diego with a real nice old leather quiver that has a NFA patch on it full of old arrows.

It is the Phantom Deluxe.

Be careful with that bow...the woven glass on them is prone to cracking. Had one and loved it but it did not take long to buy the farm...less than 500 shots.

Here's the damage that was revealed after I removed the finish and trashed the bow...

From: Downcanyon

That's what's throwing me on this bow, it doesn't look like Ekholtz (sp?) woven glass it looks like Gordon glass? Everything I can determine from it is telling me it's got plenty of life in it.

From: crookedstix
Date: 01-Jul-22

It looks more like the straight-up Phantom in Jim's ad above, rather than the Phantom Deluxe?

From: Downcanyon
Date: 01-Jul-22

Jim emailed me and said it did look like a regular phantom to him. There's nothing too fancy looking about it.

Downcanyon, That bow was made sometime between 1960 and 1962. The guy that aligned the limbs was Bruce McCall.

That's some great information Fred, Thanks

From: Downcanyon
Date: 01-Jul-22

Fred, I saw you in an article of the March and April 1965 Bow And Arrow magazine called "Birth Of A Bow". It pictures you as a young man standing next to Bruce McCall. That Fasco shop must have been something.

Mine was an early one with the woven glass…later models with Gordon glass are excellent.

From: Steve P
Date: 02-Jul-22

jaz, is it just the angle of the picture, or does the glass actually taper under the tip overlay?

Steve

From: Downcanyon
Date: 02-Jul-22

Fred, I'd like to know what you think about using only parallel laminations. I know it takes a more skill to repetitively produce correctly lined up limbs that are narrow at the ends, and I'm surprised more builders aren't using only parallels today. Did you get away from them in your bows?

From: jaz5833

Steve, they actually taper.

I've also been noticing the third lamination in the middle. It appears to be a very thin furniture veneer. Is that something that all Fasco Bows have? I'd be interested to know the reason for it. It's interesting to compare contemporary bows like Drake's and Fascos. Some of the Drake's I've seen have to minimal laminations sometimes only one.

Downcanyon, the maple cores that FASCO used were made from veneer stock...cheap but effective.

Hi, I'm trying to ID this bow. Stamped serial # is 71192. Don't know model or weight. I'm refinishing it.

Thank you

From: Patrick
Date: 27-May-23

Anthony, that's a Fasco phantom pistol grip. Cadillac of recurves in its day. I think you posted over on Facebook to which I replied with the same model I refinished a couple of weeks ago. I just brought the thread on that bow I restored to the top so you can see it's the same model just white glass front and back

It's the model in the center of this flyer from around 1960

FASCO (All capital letters)...(It stood for: Fogerty; Alvares; and Smith Company).
