Sad news. Have many memories of Ron and one of my fondest was when I ordered my first Shrew at his shop. While chatting, my son Smith made a bow from a small branch that had fallen from a tree by the shop and Ron's smile in response. Smith and I had several father-son Shrews. Our first was the only authorized Shrew clone made by Plywood Bender from a B4K auction. Ron not only gave Carl the OK to make a kid-clone, but provided materials.

I'm really glad that I was able to make last year's GLLI from here in WY and spend some time with him. Not only a friend, but a mentor in so many ways.

Bless you, Ron and prayers for your family.

Ron is the guy that helped me get started in traditional archery in 1994. I stopped into his shop in Potterville on my way home from work one day. I was looking for a used, cheap recurve and he sold me on a new Shrew which took some doing as they were priced at $350 at the time which was unheard of and the sticker shock actually ran me away...... for 2 days. The draw to that bow was strong after shooting it with Ron in his back yard and I bought it of course. I still own that old bow today. Enjoy Valhalla old friend, we will all see you there soon.

I got the call from Bill LaClair this morning. Oddly enough, I had a S&W Model 29 in my hand that Ron and I have swapped back and forth a few times. I knew what the conversation was going to be...

Ron had been struggling with some heart trouble, but in "Lobo" fashion he chose to tough it out. The Doctor wanted him to be under care....Ron wouldn't have it. He was going turkey hunting. He hunted pretty hard the last several days. Last night he told his son he was sleeping in this morning, not feeling so well. Bill LaClair found him in the cabin this morning.

Ron had lots of friends. There are dozens, if not hundreds of stories we could tell. Me and some of the boys shared a few this morning. I'm glad we were on the phone. I'm not sure I could have had those conversations with my Shrew Haven brothers face to face. For whatever reason, it was especially hard talking with Tim Cosgrove about it. We have had some lively times...

One thing small to share....Ron called himself a "Venerated Elder" once. I knew what he was talking about, but I always played dumb and would say "Ventilated Elder". It used to get him pretty riled up.

I will miss the Old Fella........

Rejoice for the life Ron lived. I think sometimes of the day when my true love and i will have to be temporarily separated and how overjoyed on that day we are reunited for eternity. Mr Leclair is at the joyous day now. He lived a life that is the envy for most of us and passed from it the way most of us can only dream of. God granted him the wish that many of us may never realize. Thank you Ron Leclair for the time you shared with all of us, wether you knew us or not.

From: Corax_latrans

Man. This really feels like the end of an era; truly the last of the Old Time Mountain Men. Not many are ever privileged to leave as heavy a mark in their field as I think Ron did.

I do hope that someone close to him will assemble his stories, photos, and poetry into a suitable biography of the man, his times and his adventures.

Given that he had apparently declined care that his doctor felt was important for him, I have to wonder a little whether he was at a point where perhaps he was ready to go whenever his Maker was prepared to call him. And for a man like him, I can’t imagine a more fitting place to be - in his own favorite place, warm and comfortable, looking forward to getting up in the morning and doing something he loved to do. Maybe he thought he’d surprise his Red-bird for Mothers’ Day.

Prayers for peace in his family.

I will fill that void by carrying my Shrew L'il favorite on many hunts. Thanks for the memories my friend. Des

I first met Ron at Compton in Berian Springs some 20 odd years ago. Met Nancy also walking their beagle. Our dogs played a bit. It was always nice seeing them together.

I was only acquainted with Ron but enjoyed seeing him at the shoots. Also saw him at Kzoo also. Didn't always say hello but often just a head nod.

I feel very sad at this news. We have lost many fine men over the years. I just don't know how you replace a Ron LeClair. There is a big void in the trad archers community today. Sad for his family and many friends.

I only had the pleasure of meeting Ron once, last year I made sure to introduce myself to him at Compton. We chatted about his bows, we chatted about knives. He was pretty happy to see my Bark River Mini Kephart, as he hadn't seen one before and we all know how much he enjoys knives. He also told me I was lucky to have a girl who also enjoys archery. She was checking out his bows while we chatted. She's planning on a Shrew this year. I think I was lucky because I got to meet him and enjoy good conversation.

I was and am very glad to have the time with him that I did, I will miss being able to be in his presence again. I will miss his posts of his knives. I will miss him reciting poetry

We've all had struggles, yet he seemed a happy man, an amazing archer, and great poet. I will miss him.

To live one's life on one's own terms, and then to pass the same way, is truly extraordinary.

A life well lived is its own reward.

I hope your passing was peaceful and without pain.

Sincerely, WMM

I was just thinking about Mr LaClair the other day. Actually wondering how he was doing. Saw him at Kzoo a decade or so ago. I was with my young son and said, look son, that's a real mountain man. Much explanation followed, lol.

From what I gather here he left this life on his own terms, just like he lived it. May we all be so blessed.

Very sorry to hear this. We all looked up to Mr. LaClair in some way or other. I only had the good fortune to speak with him one time. We spoke about bows, deer, and "Harleys". All the good stuff. And he spoke to you like he had known you all of his life. R.I.P.

Ron was our guest speaker at KyTradFest some years back. I always worry about celebrities being uppity and aloof, but not Ron. Very down to earth, genuine, and a people person, someone you would gladly share a hunt, and a campfire with. We need more like him. Rest in Peace Sir.

Ray Lyon posted in another forum that Mr. Laclair was buried in a custom pine casket and with a Flintlock rifle and pistol and a knife and his shrew bow wearing his buckskins!!! That man is a true legend. To me that is so awesome and so fitting for him.

Yes, Ron had a casket made by a woodworking friend out of pine. It had rope handles and two flintlock rifle ball starter’s were used as latch keeper on the leather latches. Ron’s wife Nancy’s (Redbird) ashes were in his leather possibles bag slung over his shoulder.

The picture includes the Shrewhaven Crew and then two of Ron’s grandsons (far left) as we toasted to Ron’s memory pre funeral.
