After watching a few episodes of scripted trash shows like nekid and afraid and duel survival I didn't give Alone the first glance.

I keep hearing about it being good, I finally watched one show and was hooked, I binge watched every episode over the next few weeks.

The only down side is cheering for someone with so much potential and having them being removed from contention because of a preventable injury. It is also sad to see a real fighter being removed because of advanced starvation.

From: PECO2

The last season I watched, the girl from Montana was removed with only 9 days left. she had frost bite. She went willingly on camera, I have to wonder if that is how it really went down.

Pay attention to the contestant that has a list of projects to build. It seems they tap out as soon as the list is done. Love the show,

I def like the skills aspect of show. It's great seeing how prominent the bow has become. I don't like watching people starve. The contestants are on their own. Still it's a show, and edited to 'build the drama.'

Yes, JR and all other skeptics :o), they really are alone. My grandson tried out one seasons and after all of the screening was done they chose 10 contestants and two alternates and he was one of the alternates. They have a very thorough screening process. After he applied online they called for a phone interview. Following that they over-nighted an expensive video camera to him to video himself in a survival type situation to see how he came across on camera. For the final cut, they sent him round trip tickets to New York where the finalists were put up in a hotel-- he was with Sam, the guy who won season 2. They were taken out to a wilderness type area to have skills evaluated by survival experts and the final cut was made.

Clay Hayes won this last season and he will be sharing his experiences at the Compton Rendezvous. That will be very interesting, I'm sure, and put to rest the "are they really alone" questions.

If they are put where they can put the bow to good use AND if they know how to use one it will be a factor.

From: Bob Rowlands
Date: 24-Apr-22

That's the truth. The environment some of these contestants draw is marginally productive and brutal. But that's luck of the draw. I really doubt there's any 'favoritism' for particular survivalists on the part of producers.

With my luck, I would have a walrus knock over my shelter, and I would be legally prohibited from bothering him.

I would never even have the most remote shot of being selected for one of these shows, because it’s obvious from one look at me that I don’t have fat enough on me to survive much more than a week without good caloric intake…. and carving out a spot like that kinda turns into work. I’m sure I would enjoy it thoroughly… Right up to the point where I got too weak to do any more.

I seriously wonder whether I could make it two weeks before I’d get yanked on a medical. I’d need a LOT of help from the little red gods….

I guess they all do, but I think I’d be on the accelerated plan….

That lady from Montana would have given Clay a good run for his money. They pulled her with only nine days left due to a frostbitten toe. For that kind of prize money, she should have lobbed it off right on screen and kept going! I know I would have been impressed!

If you like cold some of you may like a new spin-off of Nat Geo's Life Below Zero series. It's premiering in late May and called Life Below Zero: First Alaskans. It looks to hold some promise, as it features native peoples. I've watched the LBZ original and all the spinoffs: Next Generation, Northwest Territories, etc., but am always appalled by the obvious technical gaffes that make it past their editors, i.e. the character is wing hunting geese with a perfectly sensible 12 ga. and in the next frame is holding a .22. Or they execute a perfect stalk within a stone's throw of a moose and then chamber a round in their bolt action....please, Frisky could flag that, lol!

Just another "see who can stand it the longest" reality show. They set the people up to fail putting them in places with very litte game or fish to eat.

From: Corax_latrans
Date: 25-Apr-22

Yup. First time I saw this I was really surprised by how “out-of-shape” they all were, for being a bunch of hard-core Wilderness junkies… I finally figured out that they were all carrying as many calories into the situation as they could squeeze under their belt buckles. It’s no wonder the women don’t last as long.

I wonder how many MREs it takes to equal being #60 overweight…. You know… just to level the playing field for somebody built like me vs a guy who ate like a bear for six months to prepare for it…. LOL.

I’m not saying that my skills are on par with theirs, but there is an objective reality here.

It would be really interesting if they were to list the contestants’ height weight and percent body fat at every weekly check-in, so you can see how fast or how slowly they were starving. It would be similar to how they show heart rates and blood O2 levels during the bicycle races…

The idea that the highest BMI wins has been shot down pretty well the last three seasons. Sam starved himself to victory a few years back and , even though the one fellow(Kiko?) tried it last year , he failed and spent three weeks in the hospital recovering after that failure. I'm guessing the producers are screening out the fat till the last contestants early in the selection process now.

What gear the champions brought If we limit the data just to the 1st and 2nd place winners, here’s what they brought: Graph of gear the winners and runner-ups brought Every finalist had (compared to all contestants): Sleeping bag (vs 100% of all contestants) Ferro rod (vs 98%) Saw (vs 86%) Axe (vs 83%) To date, no one has won Alone without those four items.

From: JRT51

The lack of following posts on this season's episodes is confirming to me that something is different that makes the show borderline boring , even though there is a record arrow flinging and archery stuff going on. The bride passed out last night after the first set of commercials and the only thing that kept me awake was fast forwarding through the rest of them.

From: Babysaph Professional Bowhunters Society - Associate Member
Date: 01-Jul-22

Well if they are alone who films it?

From: olddogrib
Date: 01-Jul-22

IMHO it's the worst season yet as far as trying to coherently watch it. In past seasons you had met all the participants by the second episode. I wasn't sure Id seen them all in the first half-dozen this year....or maybe it's just that boring trying to keep up with it when they jump back and forth chronologically with who's on what day. Benji was the early favorite and he's already checked out with "beaver fever". I'm not ADHD, but I may not make it until the finals!

From: Babysaph Professional Bowhunters Society - Associate Member
Date: 01-Jul-22

I admit I don’t watch it. Did anyone kill any animals with their bow?

From: selstickbow

From: cut it out
Date: 01-Jul-22

I’m sure putting them in areas with little game and fish is on purpose otherwise the show would never end. Lol. I’m sure they want them to last just long enough to get footage to make a series. If they were in food rich area the show would go on forever. I assume anyways that’s part of the plan.

From: mec lineman

From: JRT51

Two beavers have been stuck successfully and apparently one not so well done and rotting in it's dam now. Probably a dozen grouse , lots of squirrels and a weasel. Game seems to be pretty plentiful for those hunting and the fishing , even though limited to flies and rod , has been productive. I don't understand why they stop fishing instead of filling the creel when the fish are biting but we only see the good stuff I suppose.

It seems very chopped up

From: David Mitchell
Date: 01-Jul-22

Very real situations. My grandson was an alternate on season one but nobody had to be replaced. They are indeed alone and self- filming. In talking with Clay Hayes at the Compton rendezvous, he told me that he too was an alternate but a contestant from the UK was not able to make it due to covid travel restrictions. Clay has a newly released book about his experience and it's a great read. Available on Amazon. I have seen every episode since season one when my grandson turned me on to the show. They get tons of applicants each season and have a very thorough vetting process.

From: Bjrogg
Date: 02-Jul-22

I’m actually enjoying this season. I’m happy to see people shooting game with their bows and not just losing arrows. I also seems like they have decent fishing and snaring.

It’s nice to see them not as restricted to what they can hunt, trap or fish. I think there are several contestants who might last awhile. I think it’s going to take some nasty weather to thin them out a bit.

Of course I could be completely wrong.

I don’t really have a clear favorite. But I kinda like Adam. I like his shelter and fireplace. I was a little worried about his shooting at first, but he seems to be settling down and hitting his mark now. And if I’m not mistaken I think he’s a farmer so we have something else in common.

I like a bunch of them though

My biggest beef with the show is some of the contestants.Every season you get someone who is homesick and taps out early or is scared of bears or wolfs. If these are things you are not prepared for don't try to be a contestant.Give someone who might really have a chance to win 500,000.00 there chance. I hate watching the cry babys or the kid that not smart enough to no which end of a sharp object will cut you.

From: Eriebuck
Date: 02-Jul-22

I enjoy this show and agree this season has been a little harder to follow. One interesting aspect to me is the amount of effort contestants put into building their shelters vs hunting/fishing/foraging to maintain their caloric intake and body weight. Seems building a shelter that meets the needs without being overly large or elaborate then spending enough time getting food is a smart strategy. One of the ladies has put together a huge shelter and neglected trying to get food-it will be interesting to see how this works out for her in the long term

From: selstickbow
Date: 02-Jul-22

yeh me too, the one lady's huge shelter is a waste of time & energy she can't afford. Minimal possessions to need to keep around, so no logic there, and the heat will not reach out there to those areas farther away from the source..... Interesting show. Not totally exciting. got to watch.

From: White Falcon
Date: 02-Jul-22

This is not my post. Don't know where it came from. What gear the champions brought If we limit the data just to the 1st and 2nd place winners, here’s what they brought: Graph of gear the winners and runner-ups brought Every finalist had (compared to all contestants): Sleeping bag (vs 100% of all contestants) Ferro rod (vs 98%) Saw (vs 86%) Axe (vs 83%) To date, no one has won Alone without those four items.

a great plan. I TOO want to go be on tv & be watched by thousands and just eat seaweed & be depressed. 'course what Mike Tyson said. "everyone has a plan until they get hit in the mouth".

From: Downcanyon
Date: 02-Jul-22

I'm surprised they didn't each choose 1/2 dozen or so flu-flus with threaded inserts and 3 big game arrows max. They depend on those grouse but are losing too many arrows. If they run out of big game arrows they can easily convert the flu-flus.

From: Downcanyon
Date: 02-Jul-22

And If I hear that lady say "shelter" again I think I'm going to turn the whole series off. Haha

From: Downcanyon
Date: 02-Jul-22

I'm afraid she might starve out because of that "shelter" of hers.

From: Eriebuck
Date: 02-Jul-22

Agree with Downcanyon wrt arrow selection. Having more flu-flus and fewer big game arrows makes lots of sense since most shots are at small game. And small game points like judos, ace hexes with a washer, etc behind them or HTM rubber blunts over a regular blunt wouldn't bury up in the moss and get lost. Does anyone know if the contestants are limited to wood arrows-thats kind of what they all look like

From: 3arrows
Date: 02-Jul-22

I think it will be a short season. No one is really fishing and smoking fish while the fishing is easy.If you can only fly fish why not bring a fly rod.Don't they look back 8 years to see what really works?

From: CMF_3
Date: 02-Jul-22

I don't think the 10 best applicants were cast.

Some can shoot, a few apparently cannot.

There's a couple that may be able to kill a large animal. If not, I agree, looks like a short season.

From: Babysaph Professional Bowhunters Society - Associate Member

So what is the object of the show? How is the winner determined?

From: White Falcon
Date: 03-Jul-22

The one that stays the longest.

From: Bjrogg
Date: 03-Jul-22

I believe 10 contestants are allowed 10 items and dropped off at separate locations. They also are provided first aid kit and cameras to self record their experience.

They do receive periodic health checks along the way and are monitored for weight loss.

They are allowed to use whatever items they find at their location if they can find a use for them.

No one knows how any of the other contestants are doing. They all have a satellite phone that they can call to be removed from contest any time they fill their time is over.

The remaining contestants don’t know if someone has tapped out. They don’t know if ten contestants are left or two. I think that makes it more interesting and really plays with them.

One season they had teams of two with the same rules. One season they had rule of whoever lasted 100 days

They have to abide by local fish and game laws. Some locations have had some pretty strict rules that really tied their hands behind their backs

All in all I find it interesting. Could it be better. Of course. But at least it isn’t filled with made up drama. Maybe that’s why some can’t stay awake. It’s on past my bedtime so I usually record it and fast forward through the advertisements.

So many different approaches to survival. Definitely makes for an interesting show. Seems some overdue the shelters and some underdo. It must be hard to balance hunting and foraging with keeping up with building a shelter with out burning to many calories. Got to hand it to them for hanging in there.

From: White Falcon
Date: 03-Jul-22

Good explanation Brian.

From: LBshooter
Date: 03-Jul-22

The way the show is set up its a matter of who can hold out the longest with minimal food. Not enough game to make it a match, and once weather sets in most are to malnourished to stay. They should set it up in an area where they each have a good chance of collecting food, doesn't seem to be even. The show does show how the so called bushcraft experts aren't relally experts. A few have skills, the others are wannabes, jmo.

From: Bjrogg
Date: 03-Jul-22

I agree that often it has become a contest of who can go without food and without spending extra calories the longest. I think some of the locations fishing and game rules have really made it even more so. Sometimes I think they are afraid to put real hunter gathers in places they could actually feed themselves because they would last to long. Just my theory and maybe it’s incorrect.

I do think this season has offered more opportunities for contestants to procure food. It has also offered more contestants able to hunt food. I think there are some pretty decent shelters. Beaver should make a excellent food source. It’s tasty, good protein with plenty of good fat. They have been catching a decent number of fish. Shooting a decent number of grouse. Bear are on the table if anyone can get one.

This season seems like it has the potential to go for awhile. Hopefully eliminating the stay in a minimum effort shelter and starve it out till the end winners. At day 30 I have seen more food gathered this season then all the other seasons put together.

Now I guess it’s up to the contestants to see if I’m right or wrong. I don’t have a clear favorite, but I have a couple I like and one maybe a little more than the rest.

I will be watching.

Watched tonight's episode and for the life of me I can't understand why houses haven't been completed on day 37. What the hell are they waiting for lol. The one guy I thought was in the front is out. Dehydrated and under nourished, talk about mismanagement of resources. One other guy screwing around trying to complete his house in a weaken state slips and blows out his back. These guys are not use a full deck. Considering they are in bear country where are the Bears Lol? All that BBQ grouse and beaver you'd think one bear would have smelled it.

From: Philbow

Unless I'm wrong, both the men that killed a beaver have left for medical reasons. Both were dehydrated and either infection or parasites. What went wrong?

From: reddogge
Date: 08-Jul-22

As far as one of us commented on the overweight and out of shape contestants, they purposely pack on as much weight as they can before the show so they can lose weight longer and survive. It isn't a bad strategy. Some a losing close to 40 lbs. in a month.

Fly rods may not have been an option for them or maybe they thought they were not a necessity. A couple of the willow rods have been working well.

I would have chosen 4 broadheads and the rest flu flus with judos or blunts and wouldn't have taken many tree shots at grouse.

The lady who build "Hodgepodge Lodge" is making me ill. She has to go.

From: reddogge
Date: 08-Jul-22

Also, the guy who shot 3 grouse in one hunting trip is a string walker. When the chips were down it worked for him.

From: vingbear

I am still waiting to see any big game. Hopefully this changes soon . Some of these people are good shots . They are in polar bear country. When and if one shows the real test begins !

From: LBshooter
Date: 08-Jul-22

As for the guys who took beavers, they spent to much time preserving it instead of eating it. Probably touched their mouth or didn't cook it enough is my guess. The one guy spent a huge amount of time cuttingi It up to smoke . I would have cooked and ate it over the course of a couple days to really load up on calories and energy. Right now I'm thinking the woman and I can recall her name right now but she the one with the dark teeth is odds on favorite. She seems very much at home and. Just has a good mental state. Hodgepodge lady is annoying and will be out mext week, the previews for next week show her throwing up. M

Fatteningup in prep for that show is not a good idea. Keith Syers tried that in season 7, it just put him in ketosis, and out of the game. Hunting/fishing/gathering food successfully from the very start is the key. Conserving calories, and working smart is another. I laugh when i see those building a cabin for the first 2 weeks, using up all their calories, for something they will live in 3 months at the most. Build an A frame with a tarp, and continue to improve it a little at a time as it gets colder. All day everyday should be dedicated to food procurement.

I tried to watch some of season 8 because Clay Hayes was in it. I just can't take it. I'm really surprised so many of you guys watch it.

I've always been interested in self reliance/living off the land skills but they don't actually show much of it actually being done. They just talk about how everybody feels about it.

I did watch some of the videos that Clay put on his channel showing how he actually made some of the stuff he did.

As a matter of survival I'd agree with R.grider.

Philbow, if I recall correctly one of them didn't recover the beaver until the next day and I think it was on land when he found it. Temps aren't all that cold yet and heat from internal organs may have started spoiling the meat, but I'm guessing. Another contestant was drinking unboiled water, I guess thinking they were immune to nasties like giardia, crytosporidium, etc. My guess is he'll be leaving soon.

I agree with the guy and the beaver, he spent to much time screwing around with it . clean it and cook it. Hodgepodge lady is spending too much time building a condo.

I think one of my ten items would be a good quality water filter and I'd have a pouch sewed in my inner shirt to carry it all day.

From: Gaur Professional Bowhunters Society - Associate Member

Water filters aren’t allowed. Only 2 quart pot allowed so challenging to get enough water boiled

For fishing only line and hooks allowed to bring.

There is a list of 40 items you can select from for your 10 items. if you google it

Adam out! He has lost more than 51 lbs. He was a little late setting snare's. Doc will be the next to go, no food and missing his girl friend.. Juan has the mental attitude, no food. Karie Lee has it all gather with health, mental and some food. Looks like she also has some shrooms dried in bags hanging in her shelter.

From: Jon Stewart

I quit watching it. All they did was complain about being sick and then puke. I want to see that I would hang out in the OB unit in the hospital.

I think Kali's is odds on favorite, mentally she's still in the game. Will be fun to watch to see who takes it. I agree that the show always ends up being who can starve the longest. The mistakes most make is to not get theirs shelters up quicker, and they need to stock pile food. When the fish were biting guys would catch enough for dinner, rather catch a bunch and smoke them before ice up. No big game, or at least an opportunity, doesn't mean a win but certainly helps.its a mental game and everyone hits their breaking point, know I couldn't do what they do.

I figured that was the case since no one had ever brought one. Without a water storage vessel that would be a trick. I think hollowing out a stump or log might be a good use of calories, as the days go by. Narrowing down to the best 10 items would be the trick.

The contestants. My grandson tried out one season and was an alternate but never got on. I was prepping his archery gear for him in case. At the Compton Rendezvous this summer I got to meet Clay Hayes who won last season and got to see the self bow he used on the show.

I’ve liked several of the contestants in the however many seasons they have been on.

Not very many of them actually took home the money.

It’s a game.

It’s not being dropped off with no way home.

It’s not that you are actually fighting for your life.

All you have to do is tell yourself it’s okay to go home.

Pick up the phone and they come get you.

There’s all kinds of rules to make things more difficult that wouldn’t actually apply if you were in a life or death situation.

I guess I still find it entertaining and even a bit insightful.

Pain, hunger, loneliness, sleep deprivation, low energy and bad luck or decisions are something you just have to experience. I don’t think you really know until you do.

PS I’m starving I haven’t eaten anything since 10:30 this morning

Oh the not having any idea how the other contestants are doing would definitely be a mind game. I’m sure they all imagined someone else got a bear

I think there should be some compensation for the second and third place finisher because they have almost as much suffering invested as the winner.

"I think there should be some compensation for the second and third place finisher because they have almost as much suffering invested as the winner."

I disagree with this. I can elaborate on this, but I will just say No.

"Okay, so I followed this for awhile,,,,, I realize its reality TV,,,,,, who supplies the bows and arrows etc,,,,,,,,,,?"

They all supply their own stuff as long as it meets the 10 item requirement. No two bows are arrows are the same as well as the clothing, sleeping bags, saws, etc.

One more episode--three people left. I'm pulling for Karie Lee to take it. She has consistently had the cheeriest outlook. Another thread just got started about the programs beginning next week called Alone Frozen. I was only the second post and already it's been closed. I didn't say anything bad--I'm a pastor LOL

I got to foot for Karie Lee , she has the best attitude for sure. If she wins that would make it two in a row for Idaho.

Well, tonight is the night--three left and this is the final episode before Alone Frozen begins next week. I'm thinking Karie Lee will take the money and buy her land to start her outdoor school.

Well I thought for sure the woman was going to win but she lost it mentally. Juan was well deserving of the win, seems like a good kid. Have to agree with the previous mention statement of who can a starve the most wins. I think the producers need to pick areas that allow the contestants to have a shot at more game to survive. If they continue the same type of area the next time some might consider a good wrist rocket, if all your going to hunt is squirrels and grouse.

Well, I guess I was mistaken in my prediction. I think for a 57 year old lady Karie Lee did great. The new series beginning next Thursday, Alone Frozen, will be even tougher on the contestants it looks like. I think food will be even harder to come by.

From: sbschindler
Date: 05-Aug-22

I agree with selecting area's that would allow for a better chance at hunting food, they all starve out (mostly)

From: Pa Steve
Date: 05-Aug-22

Well, as soon as I saw Juan Pablo (about 2 weeks ago) released an indepth book on survival techniques it was pretty easy to figure out he won. Why would someone who lost release such a book two weeks prior to the last episode?? His idea of fasting was the best choice given the situation he was facing.... very little game in his area and no fish since freeze up started. The least amount of caloric expenditure wins.

From: White Falcon
Date: 05-Aug-22

Karie Lee only needed to get one animal to have won. Congrats to Juan.

From: Pa Steve
Date: 05-Aug-22

Agree White Falcon but expending all those calories without sufficient replacement made her TOO weak to even shoot her bow. So at that point hunting was out.If you followed the whole season you would see Juan Pablo had very little game in his area compared to other contestants but he did ok fishing. Once freeze-up came his best option was to fast as proven by his victory. NKarie Lee deserves great praise... She was one hell of a contestant all the way around. I'm sure her appearance on the show will greatly improve her dream of creating a wilderness survival school.

I think it was the best season I've seen. Those final two were tough competitors that never seemed to suffer mental breakdowns. They both went to the end with smiles.

From: reddogge
Date: 09-Aug-22

Groundhunter, as mentioned before, they bring their own. Some are homemade selfbows. They bring all of the 10 items on their list. The only thing that is supplied by the show are the first aid and emergency supplies and the camera equipment.

From: LBshooter
Date: 09-Aug-22

Karie Lee could have had ten more animals and Juan still would have won, he wasn't going to loose. His mental state was key and that's what wins. Alone frozen is going to be interesting, they just have to starve for 50 days to win a share of the cash. They like to make it sound scary because polar bears are around, well if one doesn't get eating by a bear I'm going to call fraud lol. Just kidding on the getting eaten.
