The Herter's post prompted me to post pictures of this little gem that crookedstix just loves! Ultimate EDB!

It's a Perfection 52 ( actual length nock to nock is 50" as it is a Herter's) and it is in mint condition.

It is 55# draw and does not bother my fingers with a 27" draw, despite its length.

It's surprisingly stable for its length. I used it to pass my proficiency test when i had to qualify to bow hunt in Quebec.

Sealskin side plate is not original...works well.

Note the string length is for a 50" bow. Herter's never adopted the AMO Standard and measured their bows tip to tip.

I have one also. I agree it shoots great. Mine is 45 lbs and has a very light colored riser( maple possibly).

NICE little shorty, Pete. THANKS Steve Long

My vote for the evil dwarf bow would be the 46" Sitka. They are cool bows.

You have to understand that an Evil Dwarf Bow suits Pdiddly quite nicely, as he is both evil and short, with flipper-like arms that can appreciate a sawed-off cudgel of a bow like that Herter's.

I took this photo of him in a saloon we patronized in Telluride; I think it speaks for itself...a malevolent Canadian if ever there was one.

He insisted on hunting in that coat made from a Hudson Bay blanket; that's why he didn't see many elk.

Very nice bow Peter. I have a couple myself, plus the 46” that George mentioned. I don’t have a problem with shooting them either. Maybe if we could surgically remove 6” or so from Kerry’s wing span he’d appreciate these short bows. Lance

My hero! Black Jack Shellaque!!! A Canadian icon whose behaviour I strive to emulate!

That picture makes me look short! Black Jack and I are both built like fire hydrants!

Kerry’s just jealous because his arms like an orangutan prevent him from shooting a lot of fine bows!

And that Hudson’s Bay Blanket coat was warm…because it was 60 degrees! They could smell me in Ridgway!

Here he is trying to find me, knowing that wherever I am, there will be elk...and a bow long enough to actually shoot one with me.

But in all seriousness, that Farbenglas and Herter's finish certainly stands the test of time.

Notice i the picture I was above Kerry high on the mountain trying to see back to camp and if he was awake yet!

Here is a picture of me they put in the Last Dollar Saloon!

They certainly used some pretty wood at Herter's...in the late 60's they had some of the prettiest tigerwood risers ever made.

my herters perfection 52" 49 # @ 28" draw hard hitting little bow! looks brand new . don't know what year it is but i presume a late 60's?

I was always curious what bow glass they used...I know they called it Farbenglas but not sure where it came from. They also had goos finishes and did not seems to have issues with crazing and stress lines.

From: mangonboat

Farbenglas translates to 'colored glass' in German and Herters advertised that thier 'Farbenglas' came from Germany, even though it was not glass in the original sense of the term.

I had to retrieve this old thread because the ultimate EDB is up on the auction site right now. I'm taking the liberty of posting its mug shot; it's a 46" Herter's Perfection Sitka. The evil is practically dripping out of every pore in this riser...and of course, speaking of that riser, we all know who else has two horns. This one should be called Beelzebow. If it was any shorter, you could cut its limbs off and wear it as a bow-tie!

One tipoff to an EDB can sometimes be found in their duplicitous names. There's nothing "perfect" about this Perfection Sitka; just as there's nothing "magnum" about a Kodiak Magnum, and a "Super Magnum" is neither super nor magnum. It's as though they have to compensate for a weenie litle bow by giving it a hyped-up name; much like when you see some sawed-off runt driving around in a giant pickup truck.

I could rant on more, but that might give folks the false impression that I'm opinionated.

Man, I wish I could shoot those short little bows. I've had a nice KMag and tried several others, but that Herters looks awesome. Alas, my 29.5" draw pretty much makes those all but impossible to shoot consistently.

I know of a shorty Herters like that for sale in a thrift store. Too short for me. If anyone's interested I could direct you to it.

I do like the shorter bows

From: MStyles

A Herter’s Perfection is in a class by itself, whether it’s the one piece Rosewood riser, or the Rosewood/Maple laminated riser, imho.

Went to see the Herters bow today. Appears to possibly been refinished at one point as there is no AMO length listed anywhere on it, 56# is stamped in the handle and an old included string measured 39-3/4" pulled straight. I assume this is a 46" Sitka?? They're asking $150 for it but it does look as if it could use a refinish. Maybe somebody could reproduce the factory label somehow? The owner mentioned it's pending so I asked to be second if they fall out of interest.

From: TradToTheBone
Date: 14-Mar-25

None of the six Herters I’ve owned had AMO string lengths. 62” Sambar takes a 56” string, 66” Sambar a 59.5” string and a 52” Perfection a 46” string . These measurements are on the sticker stuck on the lower limb belly.

From: crookedstix
Date: 14-Mar-25

And bear in mind that a 46" Herter's is equivalent to a 44" AMO bow. This is Evil territory indeed, occupied only by the likes of Kiko Tovar and Neil Tarbell.
