I don't think a new arrow thread has been started this year. I've been really lagging behind lately, my brother passed away almost two weeks ago with liver cancer. So I've been helping sort out his hunting and fishing gear.
Here's a set of douglas fir arrows I finished today and they're heading to Texas tomorrow.

Got a dozen tapered cedar shafts to make a dozen once it warms up. Got my first set of natural barred turkey feathers to try out and some grizzly Bruins to mount on them to try. I’ve always just used farm raised so excited to try natural ones. Mostly for looks though as farm raised barred just don’t look the same. Trying to find some cresting paint to match the Bruins as they are different color than I’ve ever seen on broad heads. Kinda gonna go for a retro or something different this batch of arrows.

How do you folks go about laying out or designing your cresting patterns. Do you just ad lib it as you go along? Or do you have a standard pattern you always use? Or do you decide exactly what you're going to do ahead of time and make a template to use on your cresting jig?
Personally all I ever decide ahead of time is the colors I am going to use. Then I start spinning shafts and laying on stripes in some sort of symmetrical pattern.
I know some of you don't crest at all and just make relatively bare working arrows.

Mine are red and blue. Just a pint of each water base and I’ve had them for years.
I usually spray a coat of clear satin first. Then put on my markings. Then seal them under a few more coats of clear satin.
Mine I have a couple additions besides strips.
Usually I use a fish tail curvy line and dots randomly placed.
I usually put them in the fletch area.

Condolensces to you and the family, Ron.
Jim, those look awesome. As do many arrows here.
This is a set Suzanne St. Charles just finished for me. I asked her to make em to represent my golden retriever, Honey. The shaft and cresting are to match his coat colors... white to golden to tan. The fletching are fun colors b/c he's so much fun. Pink for his tongue, blue for his color and favorite color of toys. Black nocks for his nose. I think she knocked it out of the park.

I don’t know why it took me so long to try the two fletch. I made a couple recently that I gave as Christmas and birthday presents. I like how they look and it’s a pretty simple process once you learn it.
I decided to make a target arrow to see how they flew.
I straightened out a river cane shaft and wrapped both ends with sinew. I drilled a hole in shaft so a pole barn spike fit just tight in it. I cut spike head off and shorten it till I had 165 grains. I cut my self notches and shaped them how I like em.
Then I shot it bareshaft. It showed slightly weak so I trimmed a little more off spike. I got it tuned to my liking and used wild turkey tail feathers and a Eastern Cherokee two fletch style.
I was really surprised with this arrow. I was expecting a noisy arrow with a lot of drag. I think this is the quietest arrow I have ever shot. And it seems pretty fast to.
I don’t know why it took me so long for the first one, but it certainly won’t be as long for the next.

These are mine for this year. 55-60 Douglas fir, parallel, 3X5" fletching, and AAE nocks. I've been using 3" 4 fletch and tail tapered shafts, but I wanted to simplify a little. Also, I will have a dedicated bow to shoot "any arrow" class at 3-D, so I'll only shoot wood arrows from my primary bows. Tail tapering allowed me to use the same nocking point for wood and smaller diameter aluminum or carbon arrows.

In answer to the usage of white stain. I have used one called limed oak by Cabot stains. These I stained the whole shaft and a simple crest. Used mostly for target and stump shooting. You can really see them well in flight. Shafts are old stock poc 23/64 rear tapered to 5/16th.

Thanks guys. There’s some beautiful arrows here.
I will see if I can sneak out to my shop and finish this one up today. This arrow just plain makes me want to shoot something. I think it’s the nicest head I’ve ever made. It’s very sharp. I think sharper than the steel points I’ve taken deer with in the past. I was sanding the river cane shaft and got a little careless. I accidentally brushed the point with my hand and ended up with a good bleeder. Sorry no pictures.
This one has pass through written all over it

I don’t build much lately but had all these spare parts around the house. The shafts sat a couple of days underwater during hurricane Harvey, rubberbanded together. Lucky I didn’t throw them away; I did toss the quiver but a friend took it off the trash pile and brought it back to life. Spruce shafts.

Caveman I have one Two Fletch target arrow I’ve been shooting and I don’t see anything not to like about it so far.
I’ve been very pleasantly surprised by it.
Flies like a dart
And quite as a owl.
Really exactly the opposite of what I was expecting
I probably should make a couple more target arrows just to make so it isn’t a fluke, but I’m very happy with it.

I’ve been collecting stuff for this arrow for several years. Everything on it came from my farm.
I collected the red osier several years ago and straightened it until it seems like it’s staying straight. I like red osier but it doesn’t like to stay straight.
The pine pitch glue I made from trees on my farm.
White tail sinew from deer harvested from my farm.
Wild turkey tail feathers from my farm.
The hardest to find. The chert I used to knap the point. Technically it came from the local stone quarry but I found it on the windmill rd on my farm.
I’m hoping to use it to take a deer from my farm with a Selfbow I made from tree on my farm and nature string .
Got everything except the string now.
I don’t usually name my arrows but this one is special to me.
“Farm Fresh” seemed appropriate
