I received an order from Three Rivers today to my address in Ontario. I was surprised to received duty charge of over $100 on a $700 order. I’m curious if others from Canada have been charged duty on orders they have received. Thanks

I can find a lot of stuff I need at Canada Archery Online as well as some other Canadian outlets

The package was not that large, a set of limbs and assorted small items. Usually I have everything sent to a friends address in the US when we hunt there but those hunts have been on hold. Absolutely no complaints with the service at Three Rivers.

UPS are criminals when it comes to cross border customs brokerage fees. Do not order anything shipped into Canada from the USA if it will be shipped by UPS.

FedEx has worked well.

Canada customs will charge GST, PST if your province does, handling fee, and additional taxes if the items are not made in North America.

It adds up to be ridiculous…

My caribows shipped via UPS had no border fees unless Abe paid em in advance. He sent me a set of limbs thru fedex and those cost me 35 bucks border fees. I hsve no clue about border fees.

My then new Omega Royal Huntsman was shipped to me by USPS in Oct. 2020.

I paid GST, PST but that was it, no duties or other fees. That's all you're supposed to pay, theoretically.

I am on an Omega fan Facebook site and there have been reports of other fees being applied in some cases, so it appears to be inconsistent

Too bad for us that Archery Craft, Dunarco etc. are no longer with us (nostalgic names, that only geezers remember, for "trad" bow companies in Canada that went out when the compounds came in).

No duty is charged. No duty charges have been levied in North America trade for 30 years, since NAFTA.

It’s sales tax.

It will list GST and PST and a $10 Canada Post handling fee.

$700 US value you reported is $880 Canadian.

Ontario tax of 7% would be $61 C.

Federal tax of 5% is $44 C

So that’s $105 plus $10 fee is $115.

If it was $700 Canadian then that would be right around the $100 you reported.

Once a shipment’s value gets close to $200 they’re going to collect tax.

The order gets shipped to her in port Hope Ontario. The only cost I’ve ever incurred was the shipping cost from her in port Hope to me in Peterborough ontario

Three Rivers is the is the last place I would order from. Outrageous shipping costs. Luckily I don't need anymore archery accessories. Actually need to get rid of some Bows and limbs. Don't think us Canadians can sell on here anymore either?

I just ordered some stuff an only paid $7 shipping.

Most stuff, particularly from China comes tax and shipping free.

US you pay ever spiraling shipping. But most often they will pass small packets through and you don't pay tax. I love it as a consumer, but it does screw Canadian businesses because they will always have to collect the tax.

As part of the Trump trade deal, Canada was supposed to not charge up to some level of tax on goods coming from the US, as there is something like a flat 800 dollar exemption, any time you import to the US under the trade deal. There were different rates for cross border, or mail order. But I don't know what happened to it. I often don't get charged, but it isn't consistent as it would be if the new deal had started. So maybe it didn't happen.

The biggest irritant for firearms is the US still has us as a place they don't export to. That is a clear national security and economic threat to the US. And it didn't get changed under trump. So rather than getting a 40 dollar barrel from GM, I basically would have to pay hundreds of dollars for it. It would be one thing if these things were banned in Canada, you can buy them, just not without a huge cost and hassle, that does not accrue to the US seller.

Small packages almost always get through, but big ones will be searched, and then they hit you with the bill. So you might break up orders if it makes sense. Also having them around Xmas can help as the volume is higher, but no guarantees.

I check Amazon for anything they might have first, but in archery that isn't always much. If you check the US site it will often, since about 6 months, give accurate shipping and tax from the US, and it will often be a lot cheaper than buying from the same seller listed on Amazon Canada.

If you buy in Canada, you are going to pay whatever the sales tax is. Say it is 13%. lets say you are buying something that costs 113 dollars Canadian ordered from the US (forget postage). And it is the kind of thing that will sail through without tax. That is the same as spending 100 dollars for it would have been in Canada, because they will add the tax at the till, while in most cases your product will come through customs tax free, if you used the postal service. So a dollar of US goods that does not get taxed is as if those goods cost you only 88.50 cents. This is worth considering when comparing prices.

Speaking of shipping, shipping in Canada, is often more expensive. If I buy parts to make a Uke from indonesia, they often charge only a few dollars shipping, the product is cheaper, and I end up not paying tax. But I bought some maple parts from Vancouver to Toronto, and paid 60 bucks shipping. It also costs me a lot to pick stuff up "locally". It is often the case that I have to figure out a way to do things with the wrong stuff and I end up making lots of trips as I work it out. Whereas if I lived in the US I could get it overnight for a lot less, and the parts would be correct. So while US shipping is expensive, so is spending half a day or more on the road, and coming home empty handed. Ontario is the 5th largest "state" in US/Canada, yet I can't think of a single place in the region where I can get the stuff I need. Like nobody sells serious archery gear; or boat supplies; gunsmithing, or guns; fly fishing fly tying; Mcamaster Carr; etc...

3D printing is a game changer, because if I can figure it out, a part I make costs almost nothing and I get it in under and hour, if it is small. Big is impractical.

I started a new hobby recently, and I made all the gear I needed to get started at the highest professional level of gear, on my 3D printer and in the wood shop. It doesn't work for everything, not nearly. But when it does it is the best.

Anything in Lancasters catalogue I can get through Greatlake arrow.. Sue Tate..cheaper than I can get it by ordering directly from them...and with none of the hassles. Jigger

I live near the border. In 2019, pre-Covid, I ordered an Omega Imperial and had it shipped to a postal service in Buffalo NY, picked it up, brought it across in under an hour, declared it and paid the tax, that was it.

This process cuts out numerous extra handling points; USPS International Facility in Chicago, Canada Customs, Canada Post.

There have been complaints of damage during customs inspections at the Mississauga Ont. facility, but I have not experienced this.

But now, I'd be afraid they'd close the border again, about the time my order was in Buffalo, uncertain times.

As a broad generalization, gov't increases with population. The gov't. grid of rules/regs/taxes/fees tightens with population increase. People nowadays also want and expect more than two generations ago. Lots of factors in the mix.

Example of border fees. Pdiddly is correct. No duty, just taxes and a handling fee. Ship USPS to dodge the brokerage fees that UPS and FedEx charge.

Here is the tax form that Steelydan posted. Goods amount in C$ and applicable taxes.

bluesman...the 9.95 goes to Canada Post for extra handling through the sortation and delivery process as the tax due items are hand sorted, hand scanned and handled four extra times beyond a regular machine sorted parcel.

I'm wanting to get one of those new Bear Mag handles with #3 limbs. I was just looking at Great Lakes Arrow website and they have 15% Can surcharge on all orders. That would put the bow at around $1200. A little out of my league. I also checked out Canadian Archery Supply but it seems their website isn't working. Are they still in business?

Funny but when I try the Canada archery site I just get the notification that the site can't be reached. Anyway, I worked out the pricing and I'm looking at $1300 for the bow after tax, etc. That makes it a hard no. Lol
