Planning on being there Pappy. Hoping my eye gets better by then. Still got the double vision and pretty blurry yet. Hoping I don’t have to switch to shooting Left handed. But I’ll do what I have to. Hope you get your hearing straightened out. Merry Christmas.

We are hoping to go to the Tennesse Classic this year. We were wondering is there spacious camping available and how early in the does one have to arrive to get a site? Are there other campgrounds close to the shoot? Are there any restaurants in the area? After all the years of going to ETAR, we were disappointed in the location change: too spread out and unorganized in my opinion. Thanks

From: NYBowhunter
Date: 01-Jan-22

How many targets at the Tennessee Classic?

From: Clydebow
Date: 01-Jan-22

Clarksville is 20 minutes or so, and has hundreds of restaurants.

From: Clydebow
Date: 01-Jan-22

There are usually 40 targets with an optional bonus steel target. Also a 3D target practice range, and a bale target range.

From: bentstick54
Date: 01-Jan-22

Are there any restrictions on the 3d practice range, or once registered can you shoot it as many times as you want?

From: Pappy 1952
Date: 02-Jan-22

Once registered you can shoot the practice range all you want. Lots of camp sights but the later in the week the more selective it will get. Pappy

Hope to do the selfbow challenge

From: Boker

If you have never been to the classic then by all means just go! You will not regret it. I kicked around the idea for years and those years I’ll never get back.

From: Babysaph Professional Bowhunters Society - Associate Member

Isn’t that the shoot where you can make a self bow?

From: Clydebow

Yes

From: Danny Pyle

You won’t find any better Traditional Shoot than this one, hope to make it back sometime.

From: Pappy 1952
Date: 09-Jan-22

Yes Jack , it is called the self bow Challenge, you make a bow over the week and shoot it for score Friday/Saturday or Sunday morning, we have a separate set of awards for it, we also have all the other Classes /Recurve/long bow and selfbow. Looking forward to seeing yall, time flies so it will be here before you know it. Also our full schedule is out, just go to [twinoaksbowhunters.org] for dates'directions/motels and other info about the club. Pappy

From: Gaur Professional Bowhunters Society - Associate Member

Suggestion for those thinking s out trying the self bow challenge. Bring a stave that you’ve already gotten somewhat close. I didn’t and didn’t get done in time last year as it ended up being a challenging stave of Osage to chase a ring.

From: Babysaph Professional Bowhunters Society - Associate Member
Date: 12-Jan-22

I’m coming down for that one. I’d love to learn to make a bow. Where can I get info on it?

From: bentstick54
Date: 12-Jan-22

Jack, all contact info is stated in the original post. Any info not garnered from this thread can be found on their website, or by calling Pappy direct. As stated many times, this is a great shoot and place to buy a stave and learn how to make a self bow. :)

From: Babysaph Professional Bowhunters Society - Associate Member

I may have missed this but it’s a 3 day shoot. When do you make the self bow? I know nothing about it so I couldn’t have one almost done.

From: Ragnall
Date: 12-Jan-22

"I may have missed this but it’s a 3 day shoot. When do you make the self bow? I know nothing about it so I couldn’t have one almost done."

The year I made one I started on Wednesday with a blank I bought there. It had already been spliced and started, so I didn't have as much to do as someone starting from scratch. I still wished I had gotten there and started earlier in the week.

From: bentstick54
Date: 12-Jan-22

People start showing up and camping as early as a week before. Like Ragnall mentioned, they have bow blanks roughed out ahead of time that you can purchase, but I bet if you want the full experience you could probably buy a split stave and start from scratch if you wanted to. If you intend on camping, get there early in the week because the prime spots fill up early. The year I went I drove in on Wednesday, and was lucky to find a spot close to the bow building area, vendors, and start of the courses.

From: kstradhunter
Date: 12-Jan-22

Man. Everyone keeps saying show up early for camping spots. Im thinking we'll get there wed or thurs so hopefully will be a spot!

From: babysaph Professional Bowhunters Society - Qualified Member
Date: 12-Jan-22

But it is only a 3 day shoot as the original post states. I must have missed something.

From: otis
Date: 12-Jan-22

Pappy will probably be there from the 21st through the 2nd. Campers start showing up the Saturday before the shoot. Last year I think they were there on Friday. Not having it the year before due to Covid. If you are planning on building a bow get there as early as you can. Hope that clears it up for you. Yes the actual shoot is 3 days but the event is alot more than the shoot itself.

David

From: Pappy 1952
Date: 13-Jan-22

Thanks Dave, as Dave said the main shoot in 3 days, Friday/Saturday and cards in by 2:00 pm Sunday, but I am there all week and a lot show up early especially if they are wanting to get in the selfbow Challenge, you can do the self bow Challenge Friday and Saturday but you really got to stay with it and the bow shop gets full so people come early and get started and many are done by Friday.I tell people it is kind of like a several day rendezous with a shoot thrown in. My suggestion if you have never been there is to come to shoot, look things over, talk to people and then decide if you want to do the self bow thing, it is a good shoot either way, the self bow challenge is just something a little extra we have thrown in the mix so everyone can have a good time and something to do if they are interested. We have a lot of self bows people there about 150 last year out of 750, the vast majority shoot Recurves and long bows. We have plenty of camping but the closer /flatter spots do get taken up early, It is Tennessee ya know.Hope this helps. Pappy

I scheduled a week vacation to attend. Had some injuries last year and couldn't make it so I'm really looking forward to going. Gonna try to drag Bob Enlow with me (we might have to use walkers or maybe all terrain wheel chairs). Man I do love this event. The staff is great and the target set is the best I've shot.

A month from tomorrow, looking forward to it and seeing a bunch of old friends. Had a small event Saturday, it is a yearly thing we do between Buck Hollow and TwinOaks, just a friendly competition and some really good fellowship, we draw for groups and take the top 5 scores from each club and the high score wins, for some reason they call it the Pappy cup LOL. BUCK Hollow boys won it again this year, beat us out by 48 points, them boys can shoot.Had a really good time , shooting bows with good friends.Hard to beat that. Top 5 scores from Buck Hollow. Pappy, sounds like you guys had a good time. Pretty sure I’ve seen them bandit’s from Buck Hollow before, looks like the Horse thief is still leading the gang, looking forward to seeing all them boys as well as the rest of our friends when I get back down to the Classic. Hope to see you soon. Kurt

Ya Kurt they are a great bunch of guys and always a good time when they come around.Headed to the cabin this morning to see what kind of damage we got from the storm yesterday, the worst went south of us so I hope all is good, we got enough to do to be ready without a bunch of clean up. Hope everyone else made it through it ok. Pappy

Thanks Randy can't believe I placed !!! and after reading you thread on KY Trad fest that is tough about the bite, I just want to remind people that if you bring a dog/pet to the Classic it has to stay in camp on a leash, not on the ranges/vendors/eating or bow shop area, IN CAMP on a leash, if it is a braker we will still have a problem so please just make arrangements for it.This is a bow shoot not a dog show.We started this policy 3 or 4 years ago and it has seemed to work pretty well but after what happened at the trad fest we may change that next year to no dogs allowed at all. I hate it as much as anyone and have been going to events for 40 years and never once did I think about taking my dogs that I love very much. Please help me spread the word on this. Much appreciated. Glad to see some shoots without dogs. I have attended bow shoots for over 45 years. Most of the problems encountered at these events have been due to animal to animal, and sadly, animal to people encounters. I’ve seen serious injuries caused by dog bites. One moron brought his pit bull and watched as the dog nearly took off a guys leg that just happened to walk by. The owner grabbed his dog and left. The guy had serious cuts and bleeding. I can’t count how many times I have seen conflicts happen because of dogs barking or pooping in the camping areas, and dog fights breaking out when two people with dogs walk by each other. Please leave your pets at home!

Great scene setups, facilities everywhere,Firewood brought to your campsite, garbage pickup every morning, i even offered to stack the leftover firewood on the edge of the woods, but this guy picking up garbage would not hear of it, insisting they would haul it back to the main stack.

Great shoot provided by some of the best, hard working people of Twin Oaks! It's hard to completely put into words the experience one receives out of being here. It creates an experience that will differ from year to year, but always be a positive experience you will look back on, and make a tradition to be there the next time. The only way you will ever know, is to be there. Hats off to Pappy and his TEAM, on a job well done!

Great shoot, crowded on Sat. Shoot of this size needs some rules, written and posted. Some starters like at the start of Golf Tourny at target #1 and #21 would be advisable. To check equip and that it conforms to class they are shooting. Like a the ASA National or even small Federation state shoots at local clubs. The Traditional side has a starter that gets all shooters together and has a quick look see then sends them to their stakes (shotgun start).

Printed rules for any shoot is pretty much standard.

What a fun weekend. Brought a couple young men (15&17) with me. They're older brother met us at the shoot, with his wife and baby staying Friday night. We arrived Thursday and left Sunday. Zaccai and his wife live only 40 minutes away. The boys wanted to keep score,so I did as well. I hadn't kept score in a number of years. I didn't always shoot the target for score, but shot where I would if it was a live animal. Even so I scored 320 something. First 3d shooting 3under. They boys are great kids. They weren't any trouble whatsoever. They played bluegrass a couple nights with friends they made. I'll say it again, Twin Oaks do a GREAT job of running this shoot. Very smooth running.

From: Pappy 1952
Date: 09-May-22

I meet them young men and seem to be fine young men and could really play, glad yall enjoyed. Richard our rules are pretty simple, no arrow restriction on anything but self bow, it has to be wood our cain, the other classes are the same as with most any shoot except for bare bow and then about anything except sights are allowed. As for rules posted at the starting of the ranges that you say are normal, I have been doing this for over 40 years and have never seen it anywhere I go, Maybe at the IBO or ASA open shoots which I don't attend but no where else I have attended and I have attended many. As for who governs the Classic, IBO rules pretty much apply except we don't weigh bows or arrows or check tip weight. We figure it's the guy behind the bow.We aren't governed by anyone one or belong to any, we are self governed and plan on staying that way. As of today you are the 2nd complaint out of 757, the other was a log behind a target and if you missed the target and if it hit the log it might glance and arrow into a deep hollow and be lost, not unsafe just lost arrow , so as much as we try to please, guess we can't please everyone. As for a shot gun start, can you imagine trying to start 757 people on a 40 target range with a shot gun start, it's not a golf tournament with set number of people, it's a large archery event that we want people to have fun and not be overwhelmed with rules.Hope this helps and thanks for the comments , we take all praise and complaints serious and try to address as best we can. Have a great day. Pappy

Probably half or more shoot for fun only anyway. It was a good time for sure and hope yall can make it back next year Good Lord willing we we do it again the first full weekend of May. Pappy

From: bentstick54
Date: 10-May-22

I have only attended once so far, back in 2016. I have had other commitments every year since, but hopefully will try to make it next year again. It was easy to do a little research ahead of time to know this was more of a Traditional Rendezvous gathering of like minded folks, archers, selfbow builders, flint knappers, guitar playing around the campfires, cookouts etc., with some fantastic 3d range set-ups for all the shooting one might want to do, competitively or for fun.

I for one hope it ever changes. I for one enjoy just shooting, sharing campfires, seeing all the friendly faces of new and a old friends. And I must not be the only one if there were 750+ registered shooters, when you figure all the people that did not even shoot.

If you want a class for every bow set up imaginable, every imaginable sight, stringwalking, gap shooting method, range finders and whatever else exists, then by all means go to IBO, ASA, sponsored shoots and enjoy them. Maybe the Tennessee Classic isn’t for you anymore than The IBO Trad World Championship isn’t for many of us. Just do a bit of research on a given shoot before you go, pick the shoots that suit you, and don’t try to change the ones that don’t.
