Combed linen will let you do the impossible: put wood back on after you've taken it off. A 30lb bow can become a 60 pounder. Not much thickness needed. About 1/8" of flax on a typical bow will do. Combed flax is much stronger than most woods so can overpower the belly. Better to lay down two or more narrow separated strip, tapered in width and thickness to match the limb.

If using hide or t'bond wet small diameter bundles then work the glue into the fibers. Often a bundle will look saturated but spread it open and it's dry inside. Adding a few drops of detergent aids penetration.

Isn't a belly or back lam a way of adding wood back?

If you have a flat enough surface.

You're right. I should have noted that flax is a paleo way to do it.

Were any Paleo bows backed with linen?

Runner,

If paleo is used to identify a period we'll likely never know, given the decay rate of flax no pre-metal age versions would survive. If paleo describes a process then yes, several flax backed, repaired, and aided bows have been made.

Here's the cheapest source a quick search could find, $2.25 per ounce.

Be sure to buy flax strick, unbleached, 25" to 30" fibers.

It can also be used for spinning up your own bow strings, about one-dollar per string.

If you have access to TBB-2 the strings chapter will show how.
