JUST LOOKING FOR ADVICE: MY WIFE AND I WERE CUTTING FIREWOOD AND CAME ACROSS A GOOD TREE THAT HAD FALLEN WHEN WE CUT INTO IT IT WAS ALMOST SOLID WALNUT. ANYBODY EVER MAKE A WALNUT SELF BOW? I'VE USED HICKORY, OSAGE AND HACKBERRY. WHICH ALL MADE PURTY GOOD BOWS BUT WHAT DO YOU ALL THINK ABOUT THIS WALNUT?

Gary

I don't really know- but have been told its ok for veneers and in a riser if glued up with other stuff but is kinda weak on its own-

but I remember a longbow that Tom Parsons made of it and it looked good and did well but can't remember if it was all walnut but it was a laminated glass bow

My shooting buddy made a nice 48# Walnut self bow, using the sap wood mainly for the limbs with some of the darker heartwood in the riser. It’s about ten years old or more, and was shooting it last Tuesday.

I would try it, what do you have to lose.

If you're talking about black walnut, yes it's a decent selfbow wood. Treat it like a whitewood bow. A little wider and longer to be safe.

Can make a good bow, but needs heat treated on a 4 to 5 inch reflex form. Make it 64 to 66 inches if you have a 28 inch draw. 1 7/8 to 2 inches coming off the fades to half inch at the tips. Just finished one not long ago that is holding 1 1/2 inches of reflex. 45 lbs at 25 inch draw. 62 inches long. Shoots fast enough to kill a white tail with in reasonable range. I shoot an 8 strand D 97 string on it.

A black walnut bow, with its creamy white sapwood back and dark heartwood belly is one of the most beautiful of all bows.  The sapwood is not good in compression, so depending on its thickness you might have to make a narrower/long/thicker bow to have enough dark heartwood belly thickness. If thin sapwood then wider/thinner/shorter limbs are ok.  It's density is only about 55 specific gravity, hackberry about 65 SG so to be safe make the walnut about 20% wider than you past hackberry bows.

Tim, Been a long time. Met you at the first MoJam. I remember your bouts with Torges. Good to see you here.

ButchMo,

The first MoJam... If they ever invent time machines that's one event I wan't to attend again. What brought you there?

Yes, it's been a long time. I had no idea the Leatherwall was still alive. Way glad to see that it is.

Under what category should I post info about Asiatic composit bows? Is there a primitive or natural-materials place here?

Steve,Thanks. Let's hope more posts emerge worth reading.
