Idk boys, every weekend it rains steady to pours. I’ve been out way less than typically. I work all week, come the weekend I get rained out. Halloween starts my favorite hunt time yet I’m sitting here even now. I’ve got some days off this week but I feel like the season is passing. Not a fan of rainy sits. Rainy walks in, wet legs, back. Also have some eye issues and a little trouble tracking if things aren’t relatively easy. I can get it done but the rain would make that harder to impossible. Most the bows I have are fancy, plus wood arrows ugh. Think I’m gonna pick up one of the new Bears once they come out. Set up a non wood arrow (God forbid! Lol) and have an at least questionable day type bow. I typically hunt Orange County NY, sometimes Sussex Co NJ. What are the localish guys seeing/dealing with?

I'm retired so I can pick my days for comfort, but I like Saturday mornings because the pheasant hunters sometimes kick deer toward my corner. This morning I'm staying in - getting the same cold damp here in Mass.
Monday bear re-opens and there are a couple of good one in the area. (Of course, if I pack the 45-70 a fat doe will step out 20 yards away, can't lick Murphy's law...)

Also retired and that helps! Did take a good ole soaking yesterday, just seemed like a day that all to have been robust with scrape making. Worked pretty hard to see a 3 point and 3 does. Misting this AM and heading out shortly as turkey also comes in today. Good luck all and be safe.

Reference my recent "raindrops" post...most deer I've seen all season. I avoid showers due to blood trails quickly washing out, but as soon as it quits I'm all in. The trick is to have a dry, reasonably comfy ground blind. I built mine permanent, but something could be done "ad hoc" on site with natural materials. When rain is in the forecast you can take a tarp and have the tie- offs in place and ready.

Raining here in SW Indiana too. I'm working this morning and am supposed to be on call all weekend but since it rained so much lately I won't have to be on call. Planning on going out this afternoon and tomorrow morning. I've only been out twice all month and hadn't seen anything but a lot of deer have been killed around here in the last few days. Lots of nice buck sightings too.

Rain rain rain here in upstate NY (Broome/Tioga Counties). I am retired and can go when I want but the rain has been ridiculous. I have a great place to hunt during the rut right in my backyard but I have to cross what is usually a spit of a creek to get there. Right now I cannot get across it even with hip boots as I would be swept away. It needs to dry out.

crazyjjk, my situation is exactly like yours(Broome county). Backyard creek is like a raging river with large amounts of debris moving downstream. I can hunt on close side of creek but cameras show all activity to be around midnite to 3 AM and my few trips have verified this. This weather also negatively affects my grouse/woodcock hunting.

Some folks get too much, others not much at all. Down here we really need the rain and have been getting it the past two days so I can't fuss much about it. I know there are places that are being deluged and that's not good either. I remember those working weeks and little time to hunt...over 45 years of it. Stay healthy and when you retire you'll have that time.

River wolf, why do you think that? Unless it’s a monsoon hounds run much better in wet conditions. Wet doesn’t suppress anything. It enhances it. Really dry air hold less scent. Go watch scent dogs run. Here’s another houndsman trick. Light a cigar or something. Throw it on the ground. It the smoke stays down that’s what scent is doing. Some fellas won’t even run dogs if the smoke comes up. It’s def tougher. Rain is not on a higher pressure system. Scent stays down, rain would prob push it down too I’d think. Even in heavy rain dogs can flat out blister an animal scent is so good. I remember one year in a thunderstorm, running a trial with two rain coats on and my underwear actually still getting wet. My Wendy dog sure didn’t subscribe to rain suppressing scent nor did any of the other dogs. Often in rain we’ll just turn dogs loose and sit in a warm, dry truck and listen. Believe me it’s way steadier running and much faster to find game. And yes often enough we’re out there watching as well. Just a FYI for consideration cause imo that’s an old wives tale for sure but a much repeated one. This observation comes through many years of running, watching and judging dogs. Ask any houndsman what he notices when it’s wet or damp

Not to derail the thread, but I spend a lot of time behind beagles hunting rabbits after deer season. There are just some days that the dogs seem to not be able to smell anything. Not sure if it is humidity, barometric pressure, or rabbit voo-doo. But, they have had good days in both wet and dry conditions. The more senior guys will admit to not preferring super dry conditions. But, even though I can walk more quietly in the rain, I prefer not to bow hunt in it if I have a choice.

Longbow, try the cigar trick. You’d be surprised at how accurate it is. I’m also primarily a beagle guy right now. Day in and day out wet is good. Yes anything is possible though but we’re talking norm. I run year round sometimes 5 or more days a week outside right now (rut). All hunting is about stacking odds imo. Least that’s the way I go about it. Odds say wet is gonna be a great day for scenting. I’m not trying anything except getting guys to think about why they believe a certain way. Hope that came across properly

I'm getting my share of rain here in Southwestern Pennsylvania. Seems like we're getting rain every other day. My yard feels like a sponge. But I'm still getting out in the woods. Since September 18th to now I only missed seven days of hunting. Being retired is a big plus. No more juggling a work schedule to find time to hunt.

I think RW has it. I grew up hunting rabbits with two uncles who had above average beagle packs. Any dog that didn't have his nose to the ground (aka "sight running")didn't stay long. If they were as good as deer picking up airborne scent they'd have just gone straight to a bedded rabbit as soon as the tailgate dropped. The vast majority of deer that have busted me were nowhere near my path taken to the stand, which I'm pretty anal about going out of my way so to avoid deer trails. Many were merely settling evening thermals in the mountains...which can be confusing and unforgiving with their pooling and eddying.

I've lived along the front range in CO since 1962. We need every drop of rain we can getwe get. We used to get regular rain and snow here but not anymore. Instead of grousing about 'waaah, my plans got rained out', I say "Thanks for the moisture."

I live in very eastern PA and can see the Delaware river. I hunt both PA and NJ within a few miles of the river. We have measured 10 inches of rain this week. I have more plants dying of root rot than I care to count. I have all the rain gear in several sizes but frankly gave up hunting in the rain (except for that Newfoundland trip where it just drizzled and rained for nearly 6 days straight and I got used to living in water and raingear). The pivotal moment was 25 years ago when I went all the way from NJ to Alabama for a group hunt and "educational weekend" led by Paul Brunner and Barry Wensel. Everyone was so excited to be there and get out hunting that we all ignored the heavy rain that evening. My leather didn't dry out for days. Anyway, this past week we had one of our major storms and about 5 inches of water in a day or so. BUT THE NEXT MORNING WAS GREAT. I (and the deer) moved about nearly silently as all of the leaves were just a mat of wet. A buck walked almost right up to most stand and I only heard him at 10 feet. Agreed!!! Enough is enough for now. Back to a nice week of sun and steady light wind would just be great. I am now retired and my wife is going out of town to see the new granddaughter for a few weeks, so I have hunting at the top of the list if nature will cooperate.

I coach Cross Country, and yesterday we had our State meet. It rained hard on a muddy course. Kids lost their shoes in the mud and finished shoeless. The timing chips were soaked and being paper fell off for a lot of kids. My runners held on to their’s and held them across their chests as they finished. We needed the rain, and my kids, being Northern kids enjoyed the 45 degree temps. The four hour bus ride home was very quiet though.

It's rainy here today and I thank God I am here to see it.
Long story short, my heart surgery was a quadruple bypass. I'm two weeks from the operation and can walk a quarter mile with not too much puffing. The deep breathing is very good for me, despite minor aches as the chest is healing. The wife has been driving me around and I scan the wood for deer as would any hunter wanting to get back to a hunt. Leatherwall/Bowsite has been an encouragement to me as I enjoy the stories and photos of other people out there.
God bless you all, Bill

I used to live on Long Island, NY where it seemed to rain every weekend when I worked. If I didn't hunt the rain I wouldn't get a day in. Always worried about trailing a wounded deer in rain, however, I never shot one in the rain. Suffolk County, LI is loaded with big deer. Their genetics are from New England where deer can be big to huge. Long Island specimens fit that bill. Here in Texas the deer aren't as big bodied but their racks are huge. I'm still suffering a slow recovery from surgery last year but as soon as I'm ok I'll be out there. Frank
