I use a single roller pulley from the hardware store--- $6 or $7. Can't see what the ace has over it.

Yep....single roller pulley works pretty darn well. Just make sure you get one that's wide enough.

I can imagine how it works but I've never seen one of those. How is it better than just using your hands?

I straightened my shafts by hand for a lot of years. Now days I use a Ace roller straightener.

Have to agree with buckeye, using your hands doesn't crush the woods cells. and use a little heat before straightening. not as hard as some think.

Ive seen many way. Hand, glass bottle, screwdriver. The roller system (to me)appears to isolate the bent area more. But Im not an expert. Just looking for the best way.

I made my first roller one like in the above picture. It worked but like homemade Crester I wanted to have a store bought one, The Ace. I also have another which is more aggressive, I can’t recall the name but it is real heavy and has a groove like the roller. I used it for Ramin shafts back in the day. I now use a heat gun and hand straighten 99% of the time. Something I read about but didn’t get into until I started making Bamboo flyrods.

Can someone explain the advantage of a roller vs a solid hook/rod? I use the former but I dunno … maybe the latter is mo betta?

I have been making arrows for 50 years, I hand straighten, straighten with heat, straighten with a hook or screwdriver shaft and lastly with an Ace roller. The Ace roller work the best to keep the bend from coming back. I still
use heat and hands to get started on a snaky shaft but finish up with the Ace.
If you use a reflector for your heat you can get a shaft scorching hot in 10 seconds.

Anything solid that doesn't roll crushed grain which would have to change spine or at the least change how the arrow reacts to spine. A roller would lessen that effect and hand straightening eliminates it. Yes anything that crushes grain would keep the arrow straight longer since you killed the grain but heat works as well with hand straightening.
