I fail to “pick a spot”.

Paper targets have “bullseyes”, 3D targets have “scoring rings (or spots)”. The “spot is already “picked” for you.

Sights and shooting methods (gap, poi, etc.) using the point of the arrow as a reference Tend to force you to pick a spot.

Game animals generally don’t have “spots” to focus on.

I tend to get excited (deer fever, target panic, loss of focus or whatever) and fail to pick the spot. I used to have a bow with “pick a spot” written at the top of the sight window. I shot with an excellent archer at ETAR this year that had that phrase on his bow. (Hi Bruce!)

Sometimes I hurry my shot too... maybe before picking a spot.

I am curious as to what reason you sometimes miss. Maybe someone else can benefit from our experience.

I’ve been Bowhunting for 48 years and have taken a lot of game... still trying to improve.

I have a small white dot painted on the back of my upper limb to remind me of that very thing. :)

When I miss it's always an elevation issue - shot over or shot short and more times over than short.

Aim small, shoot small. I don’t do that all the time, and then I miss.

not following through... I shoot low

Way back when I first started I had that problem. My first miss was probably my worst. Watched a doe come toward me for quite a while. When she walked behind a tree about 15 yards from me I drew back and as she cleared the tree I shot at least three feet over her back. Lol . That arrow went a long way. She just looked around and walked away. I was shaking so bad I couldn't even function. That was 40 years ago. I still get nervous but I make sure of my shot and concentrate on my spot. Have missed any for a while now. Probably just jinxed myself. Lol.

I used to do that. I shoot a lot of 3D. I try to shoot deer just like that. I am pretty good at shooting under pressure. Slow things down. That helped me. I cheat and use a clicker and it forces me to slow down and get all the way back. That helps to. Everyone is different. Good luck

Everything you said happens to me Wayne. Shooting at a 3D deer helps me pick a spot. Have a good season Wayne and send me some good pics.

Biggest reason is not picking a spot.

From: Pa Steve

Not focusing or not picking a small spot to focus on.

From: Yellah Nocks

Not slowing down enough to be deliberate.

90% of my misses are low - short drawing or dropping my bow arm

From: DanaC
Date: 02-Oct-21

Agreed, dropping my bow arm too soon is shooting flaw #1 for me.

From: Brian M.
Date: 02-Oct-21

Well, today I'll blame it on not bending at waist. Everything else SEEMED fine. Shot over a doe.
