Made an out of state trip since our season doesn’t open until October first. Didn’t take long to find that the Bur Oaks were dropping and the deer were hammering them! This first doe came in alone after a spike had fed a while then left. I thought I had made a good shot a few inches behind the front shoulder and she was broadside. Could not find blood or the deer that night after dark. Went back the next morning to look again and just grabbed my Palmer Longbow off the seat of my truck to go look. Found her about 150 yards from the shot site in a creek. Didn’t want to walk all the way back to the truck to get the Selfbow just for pictures. She had been laying long enough it was time to get to skinning and deboning. Meat was still good as it was cool that night and she was in the cool creek water. I hit right where I thought I did but the arrow must have turned and exited way back in the paunch so that’s why there was no blood

Doe number two was shot coming down a trail headed to bed from an alfalfa field right after daybreak. She ran up a hill stopped and started blowing at me! She only made it about 75 yards

Doe number 3 was taken in the morning coming to acorns It’s quit humbling to take these deer with a bow you built yourself from a tree you cut!

Congrats. Your off to a fast start for sure. I agree with you on hunting with a bow you made from a tree you cut down. Once I did that, I lost all interest with any other bows, and only use my selfbows now.

Been a busy couple days getting the meat cleaned and ground. I tried something different this year. A friend told me he had a guy make him some deer sausage and he used chicken instead of pork so I gave it a try and wasn’t very pleased with the results! A total of 95# of ground deer and chicken leg quarters.
