So I got a dozen broadheads mounted up and spinning true…
So I took them to the range, and they were hitting as well as I could group. Aiming at the arrow in that pic, I was a bit low, but from about 35 yards, I think I’ll take that.
Except I had to make a return trip with the pliers to pull that sucker back out…. And of course now it bears a bit of a resemblance to a potato chip.
So now that I have this nicely curved broadhead… I’m kinda thinking this one’s big-game career has ended prematurely, but what’s the ticket to get it straight enough to call it a small-game head?

Put it on something hard, like an anvil and pound it straight with a hammer. Spin test and straighten till you are satisfied.

Seems like that would be a little rough on the ferrule, no??

Hopefully it’s just the forward 1/3 that’s bent, easy to check with a straight edge ruler, if the tip is rolled over fix that first, then carefully bend the remainder into shape, did a repair on an old razor head just a few days ago, it’s doable

I was thinking I might set the blades into a vise and crank down real hard on all but the ferrule…..
I’ll let you guys know how far I get with that…..

That head is tempered, don't see that working.

Because of the curvature of the ferrule, that shape is resistant to bending. The flats on both sides, if bent, can be re-bent back into shape. Instead of using a hammer to strike the bent portion of the blade, use a broad ended steel pin to hold the blade to the flat anvil surface and strike the pin. Less chance of altering the ferrule that way. Don't hit your finger.

Why bother? Did your Grandpa give you that head? One of the selling points of the Ace heads is that they are affordable. Chuck that one in the trash and buy a 6 pack of new heads that will be straight.

If my Grandpa didn't give me that Target frame I probably would have sawed around that head then split the wood. Actually I probably would have done exactly what you did...

I accidentally shot one of my brand new 190 grain Ribtecs into a cinder block wall yesterday with my 62 lb bow. The tip looked like a tight little question mark. I got the tip red hot straightened it with some pliers then reheated and quenched in some oil. It's got that good purple look and I think it's going to be just fine.

Tempering doesn't mean "hard" if they will bend and not break as your is bent, they will bend back to straight also.

Bob I'm not arguing that but it does hold a edge and simply flattening in a vice I do not see it working. Peening may work but that is tricky. Straightening leaf springs takes peening opposite of what one thinks. Heating it would work since it's just a piece of steel and would work for small game head.

If you haven't done, don't say it can't be done!! I've done it and it can be done. The Ace heads of today are not just spot welded, they are copper braised.

Never did I say it could not be done. But just sticking in the vice and tightening down I don't see working. With a little tweaking yes. I've straightened many, I was a avid groundhog hunter-locust fence posts, roots, rocks, culverts and skulls are few things that have bent quite a few. Hardened would have been a better term than tempered. Have a good day Bob, I'm done.

I straightened several Bear Razor heads . They are about 40 RC so they will bend fairly easy . I ground a drill blank so i could drive into the taper then spin them to check for straightness it works fine. you would be amazed how many heads are not all that straight from mew. I have straightened the ferell on the bears so i could get the bleeders back in. The Ace head is a lot harder than the bear head but it will still bend back without any problems .The zwickey is a lot stronger because of the three layers spot welded together .As far as tempering process all tool steel heads are tempered to a varying degree of hardness depending on what want the final hardness is desired .

Nah…. You shoot a bent head into something hard, and you get a broken arrow….
But if I could get a squirrel head outta the deal and learn something….
You guys are funny. Yeah, the Aces are economical and that’s a selling point, but it’s not real thrifty to toss one without making an effort to salvage at least a small game head outta the deal.
I’ll post an update when I’ve made some progress….
