I got a pm from bowsa about a bow I was offering. I can find no posts from him. So I am thinking this might be some kind of scam.

From: TradToTheBone
Date: 07-Aug-21

Don’t know him. Have you exchanged phone numbers? A call or two may convince you to sell to him or not. Good luck.

I just did a very expensive sale of a rare bow with a LW member with no history. Will ship a week after cashing his check.

From: 1/2miledrag
Date: 07-Aug-21

I too have done deals with folks with no posting history.

From: fdp

So call and talk to the person and see what you think.

I have sold and traded bows to fellow wallers with little or no post history. I only ever had really good dealings on the leather wall.

C2 to answer your question no I don't know him

From: loose arrow
Date: 07-Aug-21

He had an issue with someone seeking tutoring from my wife, they sent the check, it bounced, we paid the fee for a bad check. Waiting paying the fee is much better than losing something of real value.

Hopefully this doesn't happen to you.

From: fdp
Date: 07-Aug-21

It's a little nonsensical for folks to automatically jump to "scam" when someone who has no posting history wants to buy something. Particularly when, as in this case, there appears that nothing has been done to warrant that a scam is in the works.

Call the person and talk to them. You either will or won't feel comfortable about the transaction.

From: Curtiss Cardinal
Date: 08-Aug-21

fdp not jumping to a conclusion. I am voicing a concern. Due to the wording in his texts.

From: GUTPILEPA
Date: 08-Aug-21

I don’t blame you for being concerned the way folks are nowadays especially if your doing the buying but if you’re selling just wait for everything to clear and no I never heard of this guy

From: smrobertson
Date: 08-Aug-21

Call this person. Alot of my transactions were made sucessful this way.

From: paul craig
Date: 08-Aug-21

I have advised several young people who wanted to get into trad archery to look here for a bow. Obviously, they would have no posting history or trad knowledge beyond my advice. Just hold the bow until you actually have the cash.

From: Mike E
Date: 08-Aug-21

You're the one selling the bow, wait 'till you get the money before sending it. How hard is this?

From: GLF
Date: 08-Aug-21

Wait till whatever he sends you clears your bank. Your bank will show it as a deposit, then remove it again if a week later it proves to be fake. I take postal money orders only. I can run to the post office and cash or at least verify it.

From: Danielb Compton's Traditional Bowhunters
Date: 08-Aug-21

Unless you overpriced your bow, why would you be concerned about someone wanting to buy it?

From: toxophilite
Date: 10-Aug-21

The same person, "Bowsa", is evidently attempting to run a scam on me right now regarding a bow he tried to buy on August 1 in the classifieds. I'm just waiting to see if he actually tries it.

From: PEARL DRUMS
Date: 10-Aug-21

Above is your answer. Curtiss, I don't know him. I don't deal with anybody I don't "know", even people with 10 or 20 posts wont be dealt with by me. I'm talking guys with real history and real contribution, guys most of us call by first name and not a handle. I have never seen a bow or a bargain on here I couldn't live without.

From: Ovilla Bill
Date: 10-Aug-21

Just completed a trade with an individual who had no history here. Phone contact was made and had a couple of good conversations about hunting in his area and bows in general. I then checked his history here and found there was none. I took a chance and the transaction was one of the easiest and best I've ever done. Do your due diligence and then go with your gut.

From: 1/2miledrag
Date: 24-Nov-21

“bowsa” is a scammer. Steer clear.

From: msinc
Date: 24-Nov-21

I don't understand this one....who cares who he is, even if he is a scammer....the bow does not get shipped until you have the cash in your hand. What's the problem????

From: George D. Stout
Date: 24-Nov-21

The problem is, the check will cash, and then a month later you will hear from your bank that there was a problem. It has happened, so you guys who are so cavalier with "go ahead and get the money", obviously never had that happen to you. I know someone who did. Yeah, they had the cash....a month later they didn't, they had to pay it back to the bank.

The old adage "caveat emptor" wasn't created as a novelty, it is meaningful. Not only let the buyer beware, but let the seller beware. Especially nowadays when hackers, scammers, and all other sort of rabble is just waiting for you to make a mistake. How bad do you need to sell it? I had a call from a guy who called himself Joseph. The next day the same guy called an his name was Daniel. Nothing suspicious there.

From: Crow#2
Date: 24-Nov-21

Have him do money gram at walmart. You get your money soon as he pays them. Then it's all between him and walmart. I really like it.

Money before you ship the bow and only Money Order.

From: olddogrib

What...has everybody "kicked PayPal to the curb", lol?

From: pipcount
Date: 24-Nov-21

At one point we were all the "new guy".. if none of us took risk on the new guys, the classifieds would not exist. I have had only one bad experience here, out of dozens of buy sells. Statistically ok. And my bad experience was with a well established poster, although not a big seller.

Paypal and ebay are really starting to annoy me, fees seem absurd. Maybe I am wrong, but my recollection is when I first started using them in ~2000 my costs were 3% ebay, 3% paypal. It has more than doubled since then.

From: George D. Stout
Date: 24-Nov-21

Paypal is still at a little over 3%...or basically $3.00 on a hundred dollar sale. That don't seem bad to me for the protection it offers. Ebay has been a lot more than that for a good while now, but fees are how they make money, and if you're a small business, for instance, it's a lot handier, and cheaper, than having to rent a building with costs for insurance, utilities, etc. I think they are around 13% total fees. A local estate auctioneer charges a whole lot more than that. I use them for the protection it offers and am willing to pay the fees and not worry about it.

From: George D. Stout
Date: 24-Nov-21

This from their site: "Final value fees If your item sells, eBay keeps a portion of the sale. This final value fee for most categories is 12.55% of the sale price or lower, plus $0.30 per order."

From: 4nolz@work
Date: 24-Nov-21

Basically someone intending to screw you will find a way.

From: Outdoors94
Date: 24-Nov-21

I lost all my history on hear when I got a new phone I think? Anyway I've bought an sold traded an what not. Just do a phone call you can tell if the fella knows what he's talking about. I've had nothing but great transactions. Would hope if I was trying to buy something little history wasn't what stopped the deal. Good luck God bless. Mark

From: Boliver

Get a certified check before you send the bow that way there won't be any problem. That's the only way I do it.

Absolute total crap!!!! Maybe instead of trying to answer EVERY post on this forum and prove people wrong you might want to read it better first....who mentioned check??? I said when you have the cash in your hand who cares. You've had banks say there was a problem with a money order or cashiers check???? Doubt it. Who is "cavalier"??? Maybe instead of answering absolutely every post on this forum you might want to get a life...or maybe just go hunting once in a while instead of living on this forum George!!!!!

The handle "bowsa" is very familiar to me. I'm not positive, but I seem to remember it being involved in a scam or two in the past. If not, I do apologize.

As far as personal checks, cashiers checks, and money orders are concerned. They can be, and often are counterfeit. I've received several over the years.

I never EVER send an item without clear cut verification on any of the above, unless I know/trust the person I am dealing with.

The simple solution is to make them wait until you know the payment they have sent you is valid. Sometimes that takes a little while, and takes some leg work on your part.

If they don't want to wait for you to do that, then "run away". :-)

Rick
