I received such good info concerning my vintage Mamba I had to ask for verification concerning this Bear longbow. I believe it to be an old Bear Ranger. It appears to be faced with linen. Also the Serial No. 4 has me intrigued. Any ideas?

I think the ranger was a late 40’s bow. I’ll be following this to see what info you get on it.

The gentleman I got it from thought it was made during WWll His story was that Fred Bear made a bow for youths (whose family he knew) that served during the war and gave it to them upon their return. One youth was killed in action so Bear gave the bow to the father. The father kept it for years and for whatever reason sold it to him (the gentlemen I got it from).
Makes a good story, but of course there is now way to verify it. Regardless, its still fun to shoot it when my shoulder can take the abuse.

Based on the logo (the running bear) I think that bow is from around 1948.

According to Mr. Bear, when the war started here, Bear archery went into defense production. I believe he said bow production resumed in 1946. Don’t know if any bows were produced from’42 to’46.

Thanks for everyone's input. Sounds like there's pretty much agreement that its from the 1940s, most likely the latter part.

Per the books by C. Kroll and D lattimer. Bear did produce anti aircraft training models as well as a couple of other items during the war years but did continue to make bows as well but in a somewhat lesser number than before and of course after. Those two books also state that it was Fred who made the items for the Dod. while his regular archery people continued to make bows.

Senior that is a very cool bow. I’ve never heard of that model either. When you get a chance could we see a picture of the tips too?

Looks like a old Bear Ranger to me from 1949 to 1951. Maybe a year older.

Your bow has a linen back,,same as a '48 Grumley deerslayer I have . Being pre fiberglass would put it '48 at the latest.
