I’m working on a rawhide backed bow. I’m thinking of painting the back. Anybody have any paint suggestions?

The Hamm book has some nice drawings of authentic NA bows

Adding to favorites, also interested. Cash, what kind of paints do you plan to use? Any particular finish? Might find some cool stuff on PA...

I didn’t word my question very well. I meant to ask if you guys had a brand of paint that you liked to use. I glued on a rawhide backing the other day. After awhile I feel like the rawhide looks kinda dirty, so I’m thinking of covering it with a solid dark paint or snakeskin. But I’m worried some paints could crack over time? I’ve seen some pretty cool designs and I’ll do that at some point, but I want to do a solid covering on this one. Side tangent… I’ve done a few rawhide backed bows, but this is the first time I’ve made the rawhide. Used my 2019 rifle whitetail. I attached a picture of it as is, progress to date. I have a few more on my Instagram @cashscott87. I been working on remodeling my bathroom, hoping to tie that in two weeks by the time this is done drying so I can get back to the bow build..

Rawhide has a naturally a bit of oil in it, so I would think adhesion would be a concern. Be sure to get it good and clean before. I would think oil base, acrylic or lacquer will work equally well.

Bob, I was really worried about that for the glue up. , So, i I cleaned it a couple times with dish soap. I had dropped the hide on my shop floor after I got done fleshing. Of course it had wood shavings on it from the last bow, until I cleaned it up. Since it was the first time I made rawhide I was really worried I hadn’t done a thorough job of fleshing. Do you have a preference on which of those you think would be best?

I'm sure there's others that will do the job but acrylic works just fine.

Yep, plain old acrylic from the craft store works just peachy.

Acrylic is cheep you can buy it in small quantities, just about any color you could think of, it dries quick and is durable. I don't know you decide!!!!

Thanks for the info. Acrylic is dirt cheap on Amazon, think I’ll buy some so I can have it on hand when I finish this up.
