Thanks for all the comments, always welcome. Don't know if I have that much talent, but yes shot a deer with a longbow I made and was pleased. As for the tiller, I would suggest a tillering gizmo to anyone looking to learn to make selfbows. What Eric Krewson didn't teach me about tillering the gizmo did. I was in a hurry to get this one made as I gave my last static to a friend in the fall. I wanted another in case by some chance I am able to make the Hill shoot next weekend. I really like the way they shoot.

I saw this bow in person and got to shoot it, very nice. What Darrin left out is he is getting 180fps out of the bow drawn to a 28", now for those who know selfbows that is almost unheard of.

Arrows are 494-507 grains 3 fletch 5 inch wild turkey shield cut. I use chrono. for the purpose of seeing what different width, lengths and other changes will make in my bows. 180-181 is what I get when bow is fresh, after I shot 30 or so arrows today I brought it in and was shooting 174-176 fps. I'm sure it is a little lower when shooting as I pause at full draw in the process of making a good shot. Which sometimes I'm able to do, but my release has never been great. My goal is to make a well tillered low set bow evertime I make one.If I do that it will shoot well. I thought I was through with this bow but shafts were coming out tail high at 51#, couldn't get nocking point high enough to compensate. Checked my tiller and sure enough lower limb had gone weak. Several scraps later, tiller was spot on but weight was down to 49#. I went out and shot the bow, arrow flight was great. Brought it inside and to my suprise had gained a few fps even though I'd lost poundage. Seems like I learn or confirm something everytime I make one. Tiller is key, a shaft flying straight can move faster than ill flying shaft or so it seems. Again thanks for all the comments always appreciated.

Thanks everyone. Brandon we get together and talk bows, hunting and everything else, but I build em at home and then let Eric critique them and offer advice for future builds. He has been a good teacher for sure, and I always have a question or two for him.

Thanks for all the comments. Ron the tillering gizmo is resposible for the tiller, I just scrapped where it told me too. Yeah smb, I've made a little progress but still have miles to go. Lots of help along the way. Only been to one other HH shoot since then but plan to make another one day.

Eric taught me and helped me make my 1st bow. He is also a good friend, who continues to answer questions and give me pointers on my finished bows and will readily answer any questions I have during the process. But the beauty of the gizmo to me is the fact that it has continued to train my eyes as to what a properly tillered bow should look like when I am alone in my shop working. All I have to do is remove wood where the gizmo tells me once I have it set. Leave the tips a little stiff and get the fades moving a bit. So simple even I can do it. Thanks again all.

Darin how long did it take from the first bow you made till you made this one. I am just wondering how long the learning curve is. I would love to be able to make a GOOD shooting bow. I tried a board bow a few years ago but it took allot of set and it was very slow and very shock.

Darrin borough his first bows by for me to critique, I was polite and suggested I could show him a bit more about layout. His first bows had issues but he picked up the process very quickly and was making a good shootable bow in a few months.
Make a tillering gizmo Candyman and you will be making a less shocky well tillered bow in short order.
You can go to the Primitive Archer and look near the top of the how-to section for instructions on making and using one.
They help the untrained eye.

Candyman, I built my first good bow with Eric in October of 2013. I have 4 kids so time is not always there to do what I want, but as the get older I get more shop time. That was bow #17 that has been entered in my book. I have made many more along the way that I would not put my name on as I like a well tillered, fine shooting bow. They go in the burn pile. I usually let them go when I find someone that I think will hunt with them. Thats not always the case and hate to think of them just hanging on a wall being neglected but that happens. I messed up a lot of bows trying to learn to bend recurves but it's getting easier now. Keep at it, you'll break a few. I know I do.
