I've persuaded my old friend, archery companion and all round master bowyer Pip Bickerstaffe to build me a bow following the plans published in 1942 by L.E. Stemmler in his book " The Essentials of Archery".
Both Pip and I are big fans of Stemmlers written work and we both believe that Stemmler bows perhaps haven't been given the credit they deserve and have been overshadowed by Bear and others.
Pip began by using an existing former that pretty much conforms to Stemmlers specs. Our former is 4 inches longer than Stemmler but luckily the former already had the correct 7 inch recurve end radius.
In Stemmlers origimnal text, the centre section is a solid piece of wood with an added riser handle section. In our tribute bow the bow will be a laminate of Hickory for the backing and contrasting layers of Osage and Purpleheart.
As this is a work in progress, I'll post up pictures of the build in real time. Time now is mid day Friday. We won't be unwrapping the former untill Sunday or Monday
Thanks for your interest

Phil, is he actually thinning the recurved section and then laminating/building up thickness of the curves with multiple thin laminations or just bending the 3 laminations around the radius?

To use Pip's phrase, the bow is "resting" at the moment. We're using the Stemmler specifications for a 65lb bow. The only difference being that our bow will be 4 inches longer than the 1942 original. Other than that we're using all the original published specs.

Frank
The first four laminations of Hickory/Osage/Purpleheart/Osage extend to the tips of the recurve. Then we have staggered Purpleheart/Osage/Purpleheart/Osage to build up the thickness of the recurve at the tips.

That is going to be a really cool build there. In my mind the most interesting one featured on here in a long time.
I bet I've read the Essentials of Archery 3 or 4 times.

Why the length increase? What weight do you actually want?
A recent article of an interview with Pip made me lose nearly all faith in his bowyyering ability. He has some really erroneous thoughts on things.

I will be following this one. I like seeing people do things differently than what I am used to. It is how we learn . Purple heart and Osage will be a beautiful combo.

I want 65lb. The former was one he already had that he builds other bows on and seeing as I'm 6'2" with a 30 inch draw we felt a little artistic licence was OK.

Quite a similar design to the transitional Grumley/Bear bows. Not as severe a static though.

I have Stemmler's E of A and really appreciate his no nonsense approach to things.
Tuning arrows? Stemmler tells of the once common practice of numbering the arrows, memorizing the way each flies and aiming accordingly! We're too sophisticated/inflexible for that.

Stemmler also wrote this gem: NSTINCTIVE SHOOTING. We don't know just exactly how we aim a stone or a baseball when we throw it. Some coordination of muscle and mind directs the missile and with practice we become accurate throwers. Just so with the natural or instinctive method of shooting a bow. This "snap-shooting" is used in roving, hunting and by some target shots. The arrow is usually drawn to the cheek or jaw, and the pull and release is quick and snappy. The writer has a quiver full of assorted arrows, no two of which are alike, but, because the peculiarities of each arrow are known, excellent snap shooting can be done with them. The writer has always admired a good snap shooter or an archer who is an instinctive shot. It is real archery, and if a fellow can go out and hit rabbits, stumps or any other mark at from thirty to fifty yards and do it regularly, then he is an archer of the true breed.

This is really cool ,Phil! The final location of the Stemmler factory was just about 30 miles from where I grew up. We shot Stemmler bows in gym class that were donated to local schools by the company. Just picked up a 30# all glass flatbow made by them the other day. Saw it on the local buy and sell sight and had to buy it.

On above photo I posted. A 14 page or so booklet on the "how to's" of archery. Neat little item for my library. Someone on here said it and when I see this drawing I think..."of wooden ships and iron men".

This is backed & faced with some form of toxhorn/tox-plastic, will yours be all wood or similarly backed & faced?

Hi Berny .... ours will be all wood. We haven't quite decided on the limb tips yet. I'm try to bring Pip around to the idea of a sort of ELB style nock as Stemmler shows in another illustration in the book. Pip wants to leave them bare as per the illustration or perhaps with a simple tip overlay
