Dan, Haven't the city counselpersons(pc) passed new regs banning the possession of broadheads and possession of bows over 30lb? I also noted that the local archery shop was selling hemp strings and "real" leafy camo. Sorry, I just had to. Mark :)

Ha ha! The last archery shop must have closed it's doors 20 years ago- and I was at the closing of the last gun shop on College Ave. about 13 years ago. You can get hemp strings (only good for smoking or new age pot holders) at the hippie open air crafts market on Telegraph Ave. on Sundays, and I actually got a real cool arm guard from a Goth leather 'n heavy metal accessories sales girl. I shoot my 70# Mamba and 67# HH Wesley down in the basement. Don't tell the local commies!

Santa Cruz has an archery range nestled in the redwoods and oaks of Delaveaga Park.  It's a great place to loose arrows and lose the busy-ness of everyday life.  Santa Cruz is where I shoot and where I am from.  I've had the pleasure of shooting at many of the ranges in California and can say that we are all blessed with a place to shoot our bows and arrows.

Cheers!

We have two 14 target field courses and a practice range here in Davis. I'm there most weekday evenings of the year, and most Saturday afternoons. Sundays usually find me elsewhere at an organized event, especially the all-tradional ones. Check the cbhsaa.org schedule and 'roads to ranges' link for a list of them and directions. I held a Leatherwall Rendevouse on Mt. Pinos at McGill Camp ground some years past. We had a great time. I'd like to try and pull it off again.

We had the primitive archery and alatal guys there. I brought up a 3d Deer. We pooled our food and ate like kings.

We from far west NV, welcome you all over this way. When I was stationed in CA, I shot most of the SoCal ranges-Oranco, cherry Valley, and the others closer to SanDdiego. Anyone remember Roman Gray who had a shop in San Diego, or Rube Powell? I think There still is a shop up by MiraMar, but the guy who owns it is a jerk. El toro is apparently gone now. Pendleton had a great range with 3d targets available on side and bales on the other. Year around shooting down in SoCal-it was nice. I shot the range in Balboa last year and was amazed at how much was gone now. Ahh progress....?

Any of you fellow prunepickers ever hunted the Tehachapis, down South ?????? I guess old Howard Hill loved to hunt this area...

From: badger

I used to hunt in the tehachapis, mainly bird hunting. There were a lot of deer up there. Lots of bobcats and coyotes also,

From: Ten Bears
Date: 30-Jan-06

Lot's of Hog's in Tehachapis on private land! Most of the good hunting is on the Tejon ranch. The other was called the Cummings ranch, which I understand is now all archery an run by an outfit like wielderness outfitters or something like that. They say that the deer are in good shape with some bucks running up to 150 +.I have not hunted it in years, but there are some big hogs in that country I have taken a few.Hope to see some of you at Conejo! Ah EL Toro! I have not shot in quite a spell Except for the Bobby Bass Shoot at Malibu.Sounds like ET has not changed.Yes the shots are long but I have had some great fun in years past at that range.Just shoot an have fun!Is that alligator still under the Tree stand in a ah kinda of a swamp? From: Ten Bears

Barb wire only.It is a big ranch.Free ranging. They have a yearly pass that cost 2000.You can take one buck a hog or two all the dove an Quail in season. And varmits. They have some huge Elk but the tag is 10000+.They also have a small lake with some good Bass an pan fish. It's not a bad deal if you live close.I doen't have the time to make it worth the money.C-YA

From: stikbow1

Don, you must have known Ken and Mary Hobbs. He shot a lot of the ranges in the 80's with Robertson longbows. I know he died and I saw Mary once at NALS and then I heard she had died too. I still have a multifletcher sold to me from Rube's shop. Turtle aRchers. wasn' it? Robin Hood and King Arthur shoots, Anzacs shoots at Balboa. The high times of archery in SanDiego. I wouldn't have kind things to say about Bob F, so I'll refrain. Sure there are many there who know the story. Any Bear staters left out that way?

Howdy Mark. It is public opinion that is in favor of the construction. Our UT paper here has published the intentions. This is not a new initiative, it has been revived. The wishes are that there be no cars in the park. jaz5833 knows about it too as we are both in San Diego Archers. I'm afraid that "the people" will be given what they want. More to follow later as things unfold.

when you finally leave California in your rearview mirror........you will never regret it that's for sure.

I wouldn't live anywhere else after being here since 1984. There are drawbacks, but EVERY place drawbacks.

In 30 minutes or less, I can access 3 bow shops, 5 archery ranges, the Pacific Ocean, 10 lakes, 3 gun ranges, and more than 200 craft breweries :-)

In 3 hours or less I can access nearly year round snow skiing, the Algodones Dunes and Sonoran Desert, the Colorado River recreation areas and an untold number entertainment activities.

In 8 hours or less I can be in the CA Redwoods (Something everyone should do once) or Las Vegas, and world class hunting of nearly every US species

AND THE MOST IMPORTANT OF ALL!! Tube tops and bikinis in January!!

As I sit here in the Colorado winter mountains, I yearn for the good times and climate I had while stationed in Petaluma, California. I was there from 95-2004. Mountain biking today in 70 degree weather, snowboarding tomorrow in 30 degree weather 3 hours away. Pretty girls everywhere, everyday. Yeah, the politics suck, and it will cost you to live there, but it isn't all that bad. And excellent food. I know of only one burrito place here that even comes close to Cali.

Ca,is essentially 2 different states, when it comes to politics and attitude. If Ca wants to separate, they should do it from Sac south,on the western side of the sierras. The area i grew up in,had more in common with Northern Nv and south eastern Or,than it did with Ca anyway.

Reno and Vegas turn to be half californios on weekends! This weekend will see a mass migration this direction for super bowl casino options. The golden state ain't what it used to be. Plus the food ain't bad either.

From: PECO

"just a few hours drive" from San Francisco, LOL. Often times a few hours does not get you very far from the bay area, or even from just across the GGB, Marin and Sanoma county. The 101 a parking lot, I80 a parking lot. The one thing I do not miss about Cali is having to plan everything around traffic.

I was tricked into moving to CA from NV a while back (doubled my salary). I found out the hard way it wasn't worth it but now I deal with it. I'm in the Tehachapi area and if I have to be in CA I'm really glad it is here other than many other places near work (110 miles/day round trip). Sadly, the big city people found Tehachapi and now the "bad manners/drivers" are moving in and new houses are popping up everywhere.

I wish there was an archery club closer than a couple hours drive. But I can at least shoot up to 30+ yards in my yard and have enough National Forest or BLM desert to roam nearby for stump shooting (not too many stumps in the desert though).

And yes Vikingbear, the Californians that can are running to all the adjacent Western states (including as far as Texas) and likely most are taking their morals and ideas with them. It's probably the same on the East coast as well with people running from the high tax areas.

Simple Man, I noticed it as an ignorant 20 year old decades ago growing up in upstate NY. The BS that starts in CA seems to roll across the country to meet up with the BS that comes out of NYC/Albany and heads West. Sorry to say it, but with the fact of the migration in progress and the banning of internal combustion engines in CA, you may want to be aware that it'll be in your backyard before you know it.

San Diego

I wouldn't live anywhere else. If you want it, you can find it in California. Despite what the naysayers claim, I've got multiple safes full of guns and ammo, an archery range in my back yard, multiple clubs in my county, and any climate I wish within an easy drive. Not to mention the world's best looking women. BTW, I grew up in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Lived for a while in Ohio and have spent time in all 50 states.

'Man' and his politics aside, without the slightest doubt, IMO CA is the most physically beautiful state in the union when it comes to variety of terrain and climate. Full on desert to temperate rainforest, ocean to desert to cropland to sun burnished savannah, flat to mountainous, all the climatic zones and temperatures, take your pick, it is there somewhere in CA. CA is absolutely drop dead beautiful.

From: Rhonocerous
Date: 17-Oct-21

Looks like a couple of us are from Tehachapi.

I do agree with all Mr. Bob Rowlands said, the wide range of geographical and natural beauty is all there. One can be skiing in the morning and strolling barefoot on a beach for sunset, while easily doing some stump shooting on the way.

Jazz5833, From the times of my more youthful Navy days in San Diego up to today I cannot disagree (for some reason my beach loving GF recently told me she didn't like walking on the beach while in SD). The minor downside for me is driving through 10 million people to get there and then being amongst another 1.5ish million once there.
