Hi, looking to plan a traditional hunt out West this fall for Pronghorn/Antelope, looking for advise for reliable guide, any help would be appreciated. Thank you, Brian

keep in mind that not all, but many areas require preference points to draw a tag. very few are OTC anymore. the good news is there are some areas that only require 1 or 2 preference points to draw.

i would pick a state or two and start researching. i hunted wyoming twice and killed antelope. one was DIY the other with an outfitter, the werner ranch if i recall. it was about 12-15 years ago.

I also recommend contacting the wyoming guide association, they were helpful to me on a few occasions.

another thing is go over to bowsite and check out the sponsors.

good luck. it is a fun and relaxing hunt.

You might try contacting Fred Eichler in southern Colorado, I believe he hunts and OTC unit that does not require Preference points.

I bowhunted Wyoming twice, once with an Outfitter then DIY. Took nice animals on each hunt. Hunted around the Casper/Glenrock areas. Not sure about preference points now but that is a pain. Check out Colorado and Montana, good areas.

Check S.D.. Wy is pretty much out with points generally needed to draw. I've done 5 DIY, public land & would never use an outfitter. We always had good bowhunting. I took my son on his 1st in 2019 & though low numbers & wet everywhere leaving waterhole hunting out meant spot n stalk. 4 of use arrowed 3 Bucks & 1 Doe. My son took this one 3rd day spot n stalk.

Wyoming was hit hard with winter kill of 2022-2023. Tags were/are limited. Need a lot more points to draw than use to.

If your looking into SD better apply for a Public Land permit TODAY. Tomorrow 4-23-24 is the last day to apply.

Pronghorn Ranch in Wyoming. The hunts are over water holes in blinds. If that suits you, you won't be disappointed. They've got more pronghorns than any place I've seen.

You are correct regarding the winter kill and tag allotment but, some areas of the state were not hit as hard and according to reports last season, hunting was still pretty good in those areas. This winter was not too bad which should help, in coming years.

I have been keeping close tabs on this as I have quite a bit of PP's and might plan a hunt in 2025 or 2026.

The winter kill issue also applies to the NW corner of Colorado.

OK, so unless you're trophy hunting, why not go for a doe? You'll still get the experience of shooting a goat with much less hassle. I did that my first antelope and had a great time.

I will add yet something else, if you intend to do your research, in an effort to increase your success. Make some inquiries to the health of the ranches and farms in the areas you are considering. Last season’s Pronghorn hunt was a bust for me. The area had been overrun with grasshoppers that consumed the foliage that supported the normally healthy herds. I cut my hunt short as a result…..

There is an article in TBM on antelope on a budget. Might help

Eastern Colorado for the most part is OTC... it is also highly Private. There are a few outfitters that are well suited to handle traditional archers. I do not have any to recommend as I don't offer hunts. Best of luck, pronghorn are such neat animals.

I agree with 1buckurout. I have hunted with Jay Butler at Pronghorn Ranch and it's a terrific hunt. Lots of WV guys have been there and Jay has been the WVBA Outfitter of the Year recently.
