Kind of an odd thing just cropped up…
I had fletched up a few arrows and was going to burn them down to go do a little shooting this afternoon before the rain hits, and when I plugged in my feather burner, I got no heat in the filament. That struck me as pretty odd, seeing as there aren’t really any moving parts involved here, so nothing to wear out….
Or are there?
I can hear a slight humming coming from the housing, so I know I’m getting power to at least part of the system, but I don’t know why this thing would have stopped working since my last attempt at using it.
Is anyone familiar with the inner workings of these things? It doesn’t really look as though it was intended to be opened up and worked on, but I can probably figure out how to crack into it if there’s any potential benefit in doing so.
Sound advice and well reasoned opinions are welcome.

If it's humming make sure of the stud connections

Yea its basically a step up transformer from 120 then the nichrome wire makes a heater .

Seems solid enough externally, so I’m wondering if I might have to open the housing. One of the studs has been epoxied in place, so maybe something’s loose inside?

Well just bend the tabs over and the metal cover comes off .Then make sure there is 120 volts to the transformer follow to the output side

I’ll keep you posted. Maybe this will turn into a fix-along/figure-it-out-along….

I would remove the nichrome wire and clean the contact point on both the wire and the posts the wire connects to.

If there is no continuity between the poles, you have an open circuit. Sounds like under the epoxied pole. Unplug before opening the housing.

If a multi-meter is strictly necessary, I’ll probably conscript the Physics Department when I see him next. Good thing I have a stash of 4” shields around in the meantime ;)

Your making this way to difficult.Take the thing apart and look it over then see if you see any obvious problems first.Having a meter in your tool box is just like basic tools

Take it apart. Mine stopped working and I found loose connections inside. Cleaned it up and its working fine ever since.

I had the exact same thing happen. Turns out it was the cord. It was all black inside the housing where it connected. Replaced cord and it worked like new.

Well, I got it open; everything looked so clean that I couldn’t see anything that looked like it needed doing. So I re-mounted the filament, plugged it in, and it started smoking immediately.
REALLY frustrating, given that I had tried it on 2 different outlets (resetting GFI on each) and I could hear it humming the other day…. Just NO heat at all….
So now I just have to get it buttoned back up so it’s safe to use. Frustrating!

I opened mine up a while ago and it is no big deal to open it up. There are cable connections on the inside which could be broken/worn out. You need a flat screw driver and need node pliers to fold up the metal tabs holding the housing to the base.
Remember that your power cord could have a kink in it. Sometimes it works and sometimes it will not. Another thing is to when you have it apart to tighten everything up on those ribbon holding studs. Also clean the contact areas.
