Tis the season for wild turkey with our traditional stickbows, catching crappie for fillets and picking Morel mushrooms, anybody find any Morels yet?

From: BigJim Compton's Traditional Bowhunters

What broadhead is the best for morels? Is it better to use a recurve or a longbow for them and minimum poundage for the elusive mushroom?

I only wish we had morels here. BigJim

Judo points work good Jim, slices them right up...8^)

Found some in my front yard Sunday

Found one large black morel on my Sunday walk. Usually find a bunch in this same place, but this one was all alone. Sorry, no pics, I ate it with dinner.

I checked out one small area at my camp where I've found a few, nothing yet. Turkey opens next Saturday, plan on taking my son to the blind then maybe looking around that area near home when he gets fidgety. Hoping this decent weather holds up for it. Good luck, hunters!

Found this guy an hour ago. It is almost always right on May 1 whenever I find them here in the East.

I found a few. But lots of my spots show nothing. Odd, after all that rain and good temps.

I have a vacation coming up soon. Going to turkey hunt with the selfbow while keeping my eyes peeled for fungi, ok, morels might pass turks on the priority list from time to time :)... and chase hybrid stripers at night... which can surpass them both. Oh yeah, gotta go get some more watercress and ramps too.

And More Morels

From: Clydebow
Date: 30-Apr-24

Jeff, I think those are pecker heads.

From: Zbone
Date: 30-Apr-24

I've seen those Stinkhorns before too, they do look like the Half- free morels and dog peckers...

From: Jeff Durnell

ShroomID app says it's the Conic Morel (Verpa conica). Commonly known as the Bell morel, or early morel.

First time I've seen them.

From: Zbone
Date: 01-May-24

Yeah, it could be Jeff, and if it is the Conic Morel (Verpa conica) it is a false morel... Link to short video to identify the Conic Morel (Verpa conica):

Jeff, look a likes yes

From: Zbone
Date: 01-May-24

Wayne - See the short 1 minute, 50 second video link I posted above and if there is white pith inside the stipe/stem, its likely the (Verpa conica) false morel:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GG_7fJfZrwc

I'm like Jeff, ShroomID app usually points ya in the right direction... Luv that app...

Ravenel's Stinkhorn is a summer/autumn mushroom and the stipe/stem is hollow with Stinkhorns... Pix show white tips (looks like the stipe is popping through the cap) See links:

Jeff, please let us know... Thanks...

I quickly lose patience with turkeys but i did cut some ramps. This is my first time harvesting them and we plan to make ramp butter.

From: Zbone
Date: 01-May-24

mgmicky - Cool...

Aren't you suppose to "dig" ramps (get the bulb) not cut them,,, BUT all parts are edible... Let us know how your butter turns out...

From: Wayne Hess
Date: 01-May-24

Zbone I stand corrected, Jeff didn’t cut inside of stock to show, and his one to left of the two had a little white top. So many variations can grow in the wild. I still don’t pick them. Yes guys better to be safe.

Date: 01-May-24

Yeah Wayne, we are learning here...8^) Great communications to keep us foragers in the know...8^)

This is classed as a False Morel. To

From: mgmicky Professional Bowhunters Society - Associate Member Compton's Traditional Bowhunters

Zbone- yes I think a lot of people dig up the whole plant. I tried to cut one leaf off each plant so it will be around next season. I did dig a few up to transplant to my property so we will see…

From: tcbow
Date: 01-May-24

Wow! very nice mushrooms. I have not had that much luck searching for fungi. As far as ramps go it is a much better practice to harvest just the leaves, they will grow back from the same bulb next year. not so if you dig the bulb , They propagate very slowly and it is easy to wipe out the whole patch in a few years. Like most things foraged they are on the decline everywhere. Unless you forage garlic mustard, knotweed etc...

From: Jeff Durnell
Date: 02-May-24

The white spot was off center on the one, and was due to a slug that was eating it. He was mad and left an orange stain on my hand when I removed him. The stems were hollow like a regular morel with no pith or cotton like substance that the Conic morel 'sometimes' has. Still could be Conic, but I'm not sure. Only thing I was sure of was, I wasn't gonna eat it :)

Nice ramps Mgmicky.

From: Zbone
Date: 02-May-24

I wouldn't eat it either Jeff...8^)

What now do you think they are, did ShroonID give other options?

I've only dug ramps a couple times which I pickled in white vinegar and that was years ago after learning about them while working down in West Virginia... Ramps have like a cult following down there in Webster county where I was...8^) They dig some and leave some for seed...
