I had never heard of Bill Negley until the other day here on the campfire. Bow hunted the big 5 with a 100# Bear Recurve without a rifle backing him up. How cool is that!

Me too Bill Negley said " one shot one kill" and "make the first shot count"..and my favorite ,."Quiver?I don't need no stinking Quiver or extra arrows" He is the Chuck Norris & Evel Knievel of bow hunting without a doubt. You would have to be a tough old bird to hang with uncle Bill. I would have loved to have met him big-time! Thanks for all the great info.

That Lion was very smart to attack his bow arm. What a trophy a big maned African Lion would be!

I have always thought the leopard story was odd. Did he shoot a cub?

I missed the leopard story...

What kind of a bow did he shoot?

From: Lucas

He shot a Bear Kodiak in the 50's a super Kadiak in the late 60's and a Howatt Ventura (not 100% on the Howatt) at the end of his African hunting.

As to the leopard, he claimed to have shot one that was so small that he never published a picture of it. I have never seen a picture of the leopard in all these threads. Every other pioneer seems to be subject to historical revision (and often condemnation) a Bill always gets a pass on the the leopard.

I have his book, "Archer in Africa." Interesting read. I admire his fortitude. His shooting left a bit to be desired. According to his book, he missed and wounded a good number of animals. He was shooting a 100# bow on some of the larger of the Big 5. The heavy weight definitely affected his accuracy. But he did keep at it until he got the job done.

BTW, if anyone is interested, I am looking to sell the book, as well as a copy of Swinehart's Sagittarius. I'm getting old and am liquidating my library.
