Was wondering if anyone else cooks what they kill right there in the woods?

I almost never do if i'm just hunting in the evening or for only a short hunt, or if i happen to be a short distance from my truck. (like less than a mile)

But over the years i have stopped, started a fire and cooked what i killed skewered on a stick over an open fire, especially slices of deer liver or heart.

I started de-boning deer and packing them out, so it's pretty easy to stop and eat some.

Also here in PA we can have multiple tags and if i have all day to hunt, i almost never quit hunting if i get a deer tagged and still got time to hunt. So might grill a piece.

I almost never take a lunch when hunting, so if i get something i might just eat some of it.

squirrels or deer meat is about all i've ever done (that i can remember). Often thought those of you that have those spruce grouse would be a good opportunity.

anybody else do this occasionally?

I have but only twice. Here in PA if you hunt small game in archery season you have to wear orange so I usually hunt one or the other and I have not cooked any deer, I'm usually eager to get them home.

On a few occasions in the big country near my camp, I have taken a deer to far in the to drag out the same day. So I chose to stay overnight and enjoyed some fire roasted back straps. Better to feed myself then the coyotes.

I don't, but I should. Think I'll put that on my list of things to do this fall.

Only when I was young a couple of us got together and we camped out in the groves or swamps and we shot squirrel or rabbit and that was our food for the weekend. A lot of times with so much water here in Florida, much more than there is now we would bow fish, I really liked to do that more than get game, easier to clean and cooked up easier.

We have a group hunt in February in Texas that we don't bring food for the weekend, we either kill it or go hungry.

That's for hogs and small game.

I think I ate an apple once on a bowhunt.
