Hello everyone, I’m an anthropology student at Weber State University in Ogden, Utah. I’m doing a research project on traditional archery and what “tradition” means to modern-day archers. In order to get some data I put this survey together asking people what kinds of bows they like to shoot, etc. if anyone would be interested in taking taking it.

I’m also curious as to what everyone’s thoughts are on what makes a bow “traditional” and what it means to be traditional in archery. I chose this topic for my research because I think it’s interesting that traditional archery includes more modern bows like fiberglass laminated recurves and isn’t just limited to self bows, horsebows, etc.

It looks like for some reason the embed link option didn't work, this is the link:

I filled out the survey. Interesting.

I took the survey.

I'm not sure the survey questions capture the essence of why archers consider something "Traditional". Things like, the influence of certain manufacturers or famous archers.

If you've been here any time at all, you've seen the crazy spread of opinions and disagreements on what that word means.

Took the survey as well.

May I ask if you'd agree to come back and give us the results of your survey once all the data has been compiled ... very interesting ... thank you

done

From: Phil Magistro

I completed it. It doesn't account for people that started shooting bows before compounds were introduced.

Done. Good luck on your study!

Sorry.

I tried to fill out the form but couldn't wrap my mind around the terminology.

I've been shooting recurves and longbows for 62 years and don't have a clue what "traditional" is; it's just archery.

I took the survey. It shows a lack of knowledge about archery and traditional archery in questions and choices phrased.

I agree, Dan.

Done . Hope we as trad guys have helped you . Speak well of us in a crowd !??

X2

Not to mention the asking of non relevant, and rather invasive personal questions, which I chose to NOT answer. :-)

Finished, the answers are not flexible enough. I agree there should be mention of pre-compound individuals.

From: Mike B
Date: 30-Mar-24

Finished. Sterling, can you PM me your email address? There is much you are missing in your questionnaire..stuff that isn't just black or white.

From: Stumpkiller
Date: 30-Mar-24

Took th survey. Not sure about some of the distinctions . . ., but I loke laminated recurve bows of the very late 1950's to early 1960's.

From: JBM
Date: 30-Mar-24

Sterling, For most people that think traditional, THE BOW, would be NON COMPOUND and also NOT a crossbow. "TRADITIONAL BOWS" of today can widely vary in shape and materials from various wooden "self bows", to complicated lamination types. I doubt if my opinion helps but it is "probably" the definition of many.

From: Phil
Date: 30-Mar-24

Perhaps it would be helpful to Sterling and his research if we stopped trying to answer questions that haven't been asked.

From: Steve P
Date: 30-Mar-24

Completed. Some of the questions would only allow one selection when more than one was applicable. I also had one with no selection correct but couldn’t continue until one was chosen. Like Phil, I’d be interested in hearing your results/findings.

From Mike B, "There is much you are missing in your questionnaire..stuff that isn't just black or white." Yes, I agree.

From: Jeff Durnell

Yeah I only got part way into it, and bailed out.

From: Lastmohecken
Date: 30-Mar-24

I did it, but your questions really don't cover it all. You also have a couple of buttons that don't work right. A few choices have other, and specify but you can click on it a light it up, but you can't specify.

From: felipe

Wow, when do we get our grades.

From: felipe
Date: 30-Mar-24

I think trad archery goes deeper than gear choices, but is not easily quantified.

From: Mortis Sagittas
Date: 30-Mar-24

I think somebody is actually doing a psychology paper :)

From: shade mt
Date: 31-Mar-24

I got as far as the 2nd question and i was done.

my "traditional"...goes way beyond archery.

As far as traditional archery it is pretty clear to me.

"bow" means limb, riser and one string, includes self bows, horse bows, recurves, longbows drawn by hand no let off.

compound, means cables pulleys, has let off, etc...etc..etc

crossbow?....well you know, cocked shot like a gun.

From: Danielb
Date: 31-Mar-24

The survey said I could skip any question, but when I tried to skip the first question, it would not let me go any farther. So be it.

Take a week or two and read The Witchery of Archery and Bows on the Little Delta then try again.

From: JBM
Date: 03-Apr-24

^^^^Mike E. ? My confuse? Did You mean that Stirling should delve into the two books and re-do his questionnaire?? ( Eyes kinda dumb and doan gets out much.) Like One Waller commented, "Some things NOT always black or white ( yes or no won't answer the question) BLESSED BE! PS? Had and read the WITCHERY of ARCHERY. For some reason the deal about the bears didn't float my boat. Gave the book to Lynn Haroldson for His entertainment) Long before I discovered the wonderful community of the Leather-Wall.

As questionaires go ... it's a very well designed one.

From: SterlingWilsonWSU
Date: 16-Apr-24

Hello again everyone, thank you all for taking the time to take the survey I got a lot of great data.

I'm sorry the survey was clunky and that some of the questions felt invasive. Initially I wasn't going to have any questions about income, gender, etc. because I knew they would bother some people and I didn't think they were relevant to my research question but my professor told me I needed to have them in there.

In regards to there being stuff missing from the survey, I actually do archery myself and I used to browse this forum a lot back around 2004/2005, but I was a dumb teenager back then and when I got back into archery a couple of years ago I ended up falling down a Chinese archery rabbit hole so I guess I'm out of touch. I should've checked up on this thread sooner but it's too late now, I kinda screwed myself over procrastinating too much.

At any rate thanks again everyone for taking the survey I will post the results for those who are interested when I have the time.
