Aluminum ILF plates glued into a bear magnesium riser. what would you do to get them apart? Would you apply heat or use acetone? Or is there another option?

I don't think acetone would do it.

Heat. Carefully.

Stick a fine pointed screwdriver or chisel under the plate between the plate and limb pocket, tap it with a hammer and pop them loose.

You can still use the riser for bolt down limbs even with the plates in there IF that is why you are taking them out.

Yes Frank that’s exactly what I was wondering. The first black bear riser I had the ILF plates weren’t glued in. So when I wasn’t using ILF limbs, I took them out and bolted Samick Sage limbs down. Do it was easy to use both ILF limbs and bolt one. I didn’t know that you could still use Bolt on limbs with ILF plates in place. Thanks Frank. Still learning something new on here every day

"I just wish I could learn to proofread better before I hit send button lol"....I need to do that as well. :)

You may be able to break the bond by striking the plate with a small flat object like a flat punch towards the corner of the plate and it may release it from the riser. Otherwise heat.

all depends on the glue type, even epoxies vary. heat works awesome with 5 minute epoxy to break it down and not at all with others.

Good point Bill, yes, magnesium is flammable. So you might not want to heat it up with a direct flame.

my non-guru-status opinion is that the glue will give up with some heat long before you risk burning up the solid riser.

It’s ok James. I’m using an I phone 13 pro. And I’m far from a pro lol I’m all thumbs sometimes. I’m not sure why I’m getting multiple posts. Sorry for the inconvenience buddy:).

I would throw the riser Ina freezer set on as cold as you can get it for a few days. The coefficient of thermal expansion between the Aluminum, glue and the magnesium are all different and cooling it may separate the glue from the metal. It's an old trick gunsmith use when they glass bed a rifle action and the pieces glued won't separate.

Cool trick John. Thanks for the tip.
