Unbelievable work! I would have to display those. My arrows get so torn up, like what was said above, I wouldn’t have the heart to shoot those.

Those are beautiful! Mine never come out looking that good, must be the "makers talent" that's the difference.

Straightened a River cane shaft. Wrapped both ends with sinew to keep it from splitting. Let that shrink and dry and the dry fit point to shaft

From: Bjrogg
Date: 15-Jan-24

Then I halved point with pitch glue. I warmed everything up good and as it cooled I gave it a spin test getting it really close to perfect.

After it cooled good I wrapped it with sinew

Cut straight notch with two hacksaw blades side by side. I use d-97 and my strings are slightly skinny so this notch fits pretty good. I fine tune it with bastard file and my leatherman file

Next I put my Bjrogg markings on but I need red paint so it might be a little longer till I finish. I did put my blue on though

Maybe I can get to store today or revive my old paint.

Beautiful arrows, almost to pretty to shoot. Pappy

From: Bjrogg

Thanks guys but this one is going to too beautiful not to shoot.

It’s coming along nicely and I’m pretty sure it’s going to be a good flying arrow. I spine feels about right. Normally I would bare shaft one of my target arrows now.

Last night before I went home I stripped, ground and trimmed two nicely matching turkey tail feathers.

Then I placed them on opposite sides of the rear of the shaft. Fletch facing rearward. I get them line up where I want them and then wrap them tightly with sinew. Then I let the sinew shrink and dry.

Bjrogg

From: Bjrogg
Date: 16-Jan-24

This morning the sinew is tight and dry. Now I fold the fletch forward and place tip on top and bottom of shaft. I wrap it with a little sinew and pull the fletch forward tight to the shaft. I get everything right where I want it and then wrap tightly with sinew.

Bjrogg

From: Bjrogg
Date: 16-Jan-24

Bjrogg's embedded Photo

After sinew dries it would be ready to shoot. I usually let the sinew tighten up really good and then protect it from moisture and wear with a couple drops of super or TB2

I try pretty hard to get everything lined up. It is easier wrapping the rear first I have tried both ways.

The front should be two fletch with fletch top and bottom.

Fletch makes quarter twist and rear is two fletch attached to sides of shaft.

Looking at rear fletch should look like this.

I have had really good results with this type of fletch and I prefer it for my arrows.

There is a lot of intensive craftsmanship and artistry in that arrow! I can't imagine harvesting an animal with a selfbow and that type of arrow. Great work - love to see it coming off the bow down range - that has to be pretty cool!

From: Bjrogg
Date: 16-Jan-24

Thank You barebo. There is a lot to making good flying arrows. That’s why I say this one is to beautiful not to shoot. I can make a strictly wall hanger in half the time.

I haven’t shot this one yet but I have every intention to. Going to let the sinew dry and shrink really good first.

I’m hoping not to be disappointed, but I’m pretty confident that it will have good arrow flight

Next picture is hopefully in my target

Very nice arrow mechanic. I hit a lot of glass on my journey. It is a good teacher. Some people don’t like using glass or obsidian. It works a little differently than flint or chert.

It is a bit easier to get flakes to remove than stone but you can quickly learn angles and where to strike for percussion.

Pressure flaking is a little tricky. Edge needs to be abraded to remove loose and weak material on the edge. I find that I crush the edge if I don’t scuff the edge with a stone or abrasive.

Love to see that one going down range too.

Will make more after seeing how well they perform outta my self bow.

From: Bjrogg
Date: 20-Feb-24

My first question was going to be how do you like its performance?

I was very pleasantly surprised. I expected a loud not very accurate arrow.

Mine have been very quiet and really nice arrow flight. I have wondered if it might be because I use tail feathers that they are so quiet. Haven’t tried any wing feathers yet.

Glad you like them Matthew.

I haven’t done one of these for awhile.

TSA shaft with glue on point and plastic notch.

I ground the fletch myself from wild turkey primaries. First time I ever tried it. Usually I peel the fletch off the quill.

I think it worked good. I’m hoping it’s a little more durable ground.

Hand cut

About seven coats of Tung oil. Two before cresting and five after.

I’m interested to see how the finish holds up. I shoot it bare shaft and the finish seemed to work well.

Arrows made for me by Daryl Bremer. All 55#, and from 516.1 to 518.3 grains, 29" with 125 grain brass bullet points. Barrel tapered 11/32" to 5/16". Daryl did the tapering and grinding, dyeing and shaping of the feathers. They are 5.5" banana cut, with the last 3/4" cut off to simulate the shape of feathers that David Ellenbogen created after testing many dozens of feather shapes.
