I was asked to make a hip quiver (arrows pointing toward back) and was wondering what oz. leather to use. First time making one.
I thought of 5, 6, or 7 oz. any help would be appreciated, thank you.

I’d lean towards 7-8 oz. That’s what I use to make a majority of my knife sheaths.

I have made more than a few. I like 8-10 oz leather but 6-8oz works well. I have also used heavier,10-12oz, but that is overkill IMO. One might say heavy so arrow points don’t stick through but I used to add another strip in bottom, now I use a piece of old mouse pad. This one is about 15 years old now. Still use it .

I believe Tandy Leather has a pattern for this style quiver. I made my pattern from a cheap one that fell apart and my wife’s ability at making sewing patterns. But at the time I wanted a longer one as my 31” arrows had a habit of falling out unless positioned carefully in it . I have also enlarged the arrow compartment to accommodate 8-10 large diameter shafts like woodies and increase capacity. So you see one of these can be customized like you want without to much hassle.

Here are a couple I made from what Tandy calls Montana vegetable tanned leather. It has a distressed finish and is 5-6 ounce in weight. That's more than adequate.
This one uses copper finished hardware and copper rivets. I made a d-ring out of heavy copper wire.

This one is made of the same leather. I dyed it a darker brown and used brass hardware.
