back probably 16 or 17 years ago some of the first laminated bows i built were hickory cores under glass.

They seemed good, good speed etc....ended up selling all of them, and i haven't used much hickory in the last 10 yrs.

But it is very readily available for me, tough as nails, though prone to moisture, but in a glass bow its a rather mute point as long as the edges are sealed good.

It is a bit heavier, but not really any heavier than some other woods.

curious as to other experiences with hickory...i've been tempted to experiment with it a bit more.

I really like it. I wish I had some hickory lams know.

I haven't used it in a glass bow but have a stack of big planks from some pignut trees I cut several years ago. The sapwood is white and plain looking of course and I plan to use it for arrow shafts and backing strips, but I could use some for glass bow lams I guess. Been a while since I made a glass bow. I remember some of the heartwood planks have some character that might look nice under clear glass or used in risers. One of these days I'll get a roundtoit.

I was also looking at some toasted curly hickory boards online today. They're beaut and would look great under clear glass. Toasting makes it less hydroscopic, but like you said, that doesn't matter much in a glass bow. Toasting it changes the color and brings out the figure too.

I believe Jerry when he owned Great northern bows Co. used a lot of hickory. It was my first 56" Critter Gitter.

Keegan used one lam of hickory on my Omega Imperial. Very quick bow, just didn't fit me. I bet one core of hickory is bomb proof

I'm thinking on the WTT comp, hickory placed high in glass bow...

I like it in arrows, again due to the weight.

I wonder if you can get hickory lams in a 7 lakes longbow. Mike offers what he calls his North American hardwoods bows, I think hickory is an option.

I have a 7 Lakes being built with walnut outer lams and cherry inner lams... Supposed to get glued up this week...

Two more good domestic woods for limb laminations, cherry and walnut. I especially like cherry. Regular flat grain black cherry looks nice under clear glass, but even nicer if you can find some with figure or mineral in it.

One of my 7 lakes bows is cherry and walnut lams, the other is all cherry lams, both shoot great.

I guess i'll just do it.

Years ago i built some using a bingham design...i long since stopped using them.

I'd just for curiosity like to build one of my hill style longbows with hickory.

Heavy core=woods tend to make a bow have more hand-shock during release.

I have used some heat tempered hi kory as a core wood in a glass faced bow. Very impressive shooter and no hand shock. A little more solid feel than all bamboo/glass. Required less glass to make the same weight bow as when using bamboo, and shoots faster

If i remember correctly Nate I needed less stack thickness with hickory as well.

Back then they were what i consider more of a flatbow, certainly wider at the fades and tips than what i prefer now.

I just cut and ground the lams last evening, guess we'll see.

I've made several R/D bows with hickory cores. Works great for me.

My 66" Omega Royal Huntsman, made a year ago, has hickory cores (2 lams).

I don't think Kegan is currently offering hickory now, though.

This bow is a very nice "shooter" for me.
