Interesting. Thanks Batman.

Folks place added value on split-out muzzleloader ramrods too.

My hickory mz ramrods started as straight grain arrow shafts. I made many hundreds of hickory arrows from 8/4 boards over 15 years or so. I converted a half dozen to ramrod use. Right now I have five of them. Straight grained hickory is 'the' wood for mz ramrods. And indestructible heavy hard hitting arrows as well.

I agree Bob.

Even though I don't split each individual blank by hand, I select the trees for straight grain, verify it by splitting large pieces, but then use power tools to saw into smaller blanks. Less waste and faster, but I'm still confident they follow the grain.

Hickory is certainly tough, especially good straight grained ones. That said, I have the original hickory ramrod still in my TC Hawken, made in '74, and it has seen a LOT of use. The growth rings have been cut across at a steep enough angle that there are 12 of them cut through from one end to the other. Not how you or I would do it, but another testament to hickory perhaps.

Thanks for the video Batman, and Frank for posting it. I enjoyed it. Lance

That's some central MA scenery in that video.

Jay Massey did that with Sitka spruce. I tried once with an ash log. Too much work, easier to find a straight grained board. Hickory is incredibly tough.

Nice, I think I'll just call Rose City Archery

Hi Folks, Glad that the vid sparked some interest. Since I am a total klutz with my hands and tools, I can admire the efforts and achievements of people who can do things like the person in the video. Course? The WALL has PLENTY of MEGA-TALENT! Love to see the build-alongs that I would never attempt. MERCY BOW-COUP!

Yes, the hard way.

And then launch them into the sky to maybe never be shot again?!?!? and lost forever??!!

Yikes! I don't have the patience or time for that!

But an interesting, enjoyable, and well produced video for sure!
