BIG BUST! 6 hunters,4 guides,8 hours every day and a total of only 2 moose sighted and they were about 100 yards at almost dark.600 man hours in tree stands and on foot. Hard to find a guide that has done his home work.Even the local warden said that poachers and natives had already shot out everything in that area...

Wow, that sucks.

Guided hunts are getting to be a rip off...I think Moose are few and far between about everywhere you go now...

totem, not 100% in hunting even with guides. I was in the Alberta's Rockies a month ago and just enjoyed being out there, even caught a glimpse of a bull moose in a valley. Wasn't there on a hunt but if I was it would ended up to be a bust, my knee completely collapsed and going in very soon for a replacement, it would have been one tough time getting my butt out of the outback and this hunting season is a bust.

would you mind sharing where you hunted?

I guess if I were to book a hunt, the next thing to do would be to call Fish and Game and ask them about the area.

Too bad you didn't call and talk to the local warden before you booked the hunt.

Even in a good area moose are not the slam dunk many hunters think they are. I've found them to be one of the most weather-dependant and frustrating animals to bag! The hunting videos make it look so easy, but I've never found that to be the case.

Well I'm sorry you didn't score a moose. What area/outfitter did you use , so others don't make that trip .

if you really want to shoot a moose(or at least have a very good chance of seeing moose) do your reseach and go to newfoundland. They dont have as large of antlers but they are still nice and there's no such thing as a bad moose, especially with a bow. beautiful land and terrific people and the prices are reasonable. they have moose like the midwest has whitetails.

Sorry you didn't get a moose...maybe next time

1thank you for the recommendation,. Gary..yes we have the highest moose numbers in Canada..there are about two moose vehicle collisions per day on this island. Two fellows I know got their bulls last week..gun. I'm hoping for a tag next year. Jigger

Who did you hunt with and where was your camp.

our hunt was about 100 miles north north west of Edmonton,Alberta. The outfiter was Alberta Wilderness Guide Service.I can't say enough about the service, the camp or the guides,They provided everything except moose.Comming home with no moose was no big deal,I have been skunked many times but I did expect to at least see moose...

To add a point to consider. Its been very warm up here. Moose still rut and breed of course. But its considerably better when its cold. This coming week has tradionally better for me. Got mine yesterday. Story to come.

I would have been disappointed too if not anyone in my group saw a moose. I've been on 3 Alberta archery moose hunts and although I saw moose on each trip I never was able to get that bow shot on a bull I wanted. Close on a couple occasions but just didn't work out for me. Still have the memories of spending 6 weeks trying and those will last me the rest of my life.

Some of my most memorable hunts didn't end with an animal on the ground. Some 30 odd years back I went on a horseback hunt in the Kananskas area of Alberta I didn't get an a elk but I saw them and heard them bugle and that's all I asked for. A great outfitter...good horses, good camp. That was ..ANCHOR D outfitters, last week I saw an ad for them in Canadian Geographic.. maybe it's time I went back. Ps my camp mate took a bull moose the first day. Jigger

I have only done a guided hunt twice for elk. Very bad experience both times.

We got lucky here in AK, me and my buddy went 2 for 2. The first one was a float hunt we had planned for the past year and he shot a solid 44" bull. We went out later in the week where I got a very large bodied 57" bull from about 12 yards.

I'd really like to go to eastern Canada and try for caribou and moose so I could finish my moose slam.

Time for some serious reference checking. Talk to the game biologist about moose populations in the area.

It sucks for us when we are ‘t in a target rich environment…

I would hate to depend on a guide for a good time, however if that's the only way to go it's better than sitting home. My best moose hunts have always been when I did the whole thing. Moose are not abundant anywhere compared to elk deer or caribou so getting a shot or even seeing one is a challenge. I would never go after moose with the idea that I could kill one in a week, 3 weeks allows time to allow the rut to start and locate that moose you want and then time to maybe call him in. Yes I have killed my bull the first day, but I also have went 3 weeks and no moose. But I enjoyed the hunt regardless. It's the journey not the destination.

There are places that once you have paid the initial fee will also allow you to stay as long as you want for a minimal fee. More moose scouting and hunting.

Nothing like moose camp, but elk camp always keeps me distracted!
