So... I got a Fox Breed the other day. Unpacking the bow I could tell why this bow had such a strong reputation. At 58" it pulled so effortlessly to my 30" draw... and goodness was it beautiful. So pumped! Just in time to get it tuned up in front of deer season. 58" is gonna be perfect from the ground!

The recommended brace height is 6.5". To get there, I had to dang near completely unwind the string... and even then it only got to 6 3/4". I took a couple of shots... was a little louder than advertised. In fact... it was really loud.

More silencers... still loud. Different silencers. Loud. I couldn't really adjust the brace height much because it was already higher than recommended. Maybe if I tighten the fitting...I waxed it. Still really loud. Shot harsh... and loud. I added more silencers... velcro... Selway quiver... every trick I knew I threw at this thing. Nothing helped.

So... I wasn't going to waste more time on a bow I didn't and would never love. I decided I'm either going to have to sell this thing or send it back to Ron. Never been more disappointed. All I'd ever heard is how smooth and quiet they are. It WAS smooth... but so loud.

I decided "just let me try one more thing." Ron sent me two strings... I thought I'll just try that other string before I use that bow for wood chips. I put the other one on... and hu? that's strange. THIS string needed to be twisted a bunch. First try had it about a 5" brace height. I'm having cognitive dissonance at this point.

Braced it at 6 and a little change... grabbed an arrow shot it into my garage target. Just the quietest little thud you ever heard came from that bow. What? More cognitive dissonance. Anyway... a few adjustments later and that bow is LITERALLY MY QUIETEST bow.

Took me a while but I finally figured it out. One string was 2" too short... and that's the one I just happen to put on first. Untwisting it all the way to make it fit was what was making it so loud. I know this - because I read a thread on here a while back talking about twists being necessary. I just didn't make the connection.

Lesson learned.

I’m glad you got it to shoot right. I own a Fox Royal Crown that shoots nice and would like to try Ron’s High Sierra and Breed.

That's happened to me several times. Certain bows just love certain strings.

Oh, thot this was about me. Never mind.

Gotta wonder why the long string though.

Short rather.

those Breeds are really good in the speed departmant and mine is ultra quiet

Nothing stupid about it. Even the most experienced archery can be confounded by seemingly simple things; been there done that and likely will again sometime. :)

As usual... operator error...

My question is why did they pack two strings different lengths? Must have been an off day. At least you solved the problem and still “love” the bow.

Glad you got it figured out.

From the Fox Archery Website "The Breed recurve recommended brace height should be 6 ¾" to 7 1/4""

If I recall, mine was closer to 7 1/2" but I tend to like and tune a higher brace height.

The Breed is quick and quiet! Enjoy.

I once owned a recurve that absolutely would not brace with a 'normal' 4-inches-shorter string. Had over 50 extra twists in it and still 'nope'. Got a string 1 inch shorter and it was perfect.

What works, works.

I'm just glad your story didn't end with a broken bow.....

Ron owes you a new (longer) second string. Quality control is needed in every aspect of the process.

I am going to agree with GoldenTrout here. When I started reading, I knew that it was going to end with a broken limb or bow somehow. I am glad to have finished reading and the new bow is what you wanted. ALL to often it is something seemingly small that can have a massive affect on the performance or shoot-ability of the bows. Those things tend to be shooter related in my experience. How about a pic of the new bow ??
