I used a quiver on mine for a while, but have settled on a back quiver now.

Mine are pretty primitive. No patience for the finishing work. lol Some still have a little bark on the back! But...they kill deer and shoot straight. No backing on any of my hickory bows.

Last season I vowed to retire my regular self made Osage selfbow. 50#@28”, 63” after it’s 10th successful season. But as the weather cools and I start getting my day pack and gear ready I find myself reaching for the same bow. I only use it for hunting, as I have 6 or 7 to pick from to shoot the rest of the year.

GREAT WORK on the BOWS!

I’m hoping to be sitting in a tree a week from now. I don’t get as much time for it as I’d like, but I love everything about hunting with a selfbow.

From picking up the nearly weightless bow and arrows and carrying them to my hunting spot with the satisfaction of knowing I made it all.

To the getting so close that I can’t move to get a shoot off.

The thrill of watching a animal pass just out of my self imposed range and almost giving me the shot I’m waiting for. Some people would find it frustrating, but I find it very exciting .

The challenge of keeping it all together when it does all come together and getting that good shot off undetected.

The wait to follow that good blood trial to my down buck.

I thought I might try it to see if I could do it. I never realized that I would enjoy it as much as I do.

I plan on using my “Simply Orange “ selfbow and my obsidian point River cane arrows.

The bow has been on lots of exciting hunts already and proven it’s effectiveness.

I’m still looking to prove the arrows yet. I know they just need the right opportunity and I hope to find the time and opportunity to show they are up to the task to.

If you have ever thought you might like to try it I really encourage you to try it.

Don’t be surprised if you can’t make yourself hunt any other way anymore though. That is the one thing I don’t like. I just can’t seem to find the same thrill hunting with a gun I once did. I’m starting to have it come back though. I encourage hunting period

This springs Jake Turkey with my last bow I finished last winter. Slightly flipped tips, Osage, deer sinew backed and snake skin. Hope to have some good sits for deer with it soon.

I also am hunting with my selfbow, a 60" 40# Osage bendy. I am not the best bowyer by any means and definitely not the best at finishing but they shoot good for me. I seem to be terrible with the hickory, lousy luck with it.

Jim that is a beautiful bow. That is the shortest connection I have ever seen. Is it solid? Is it threaded? What is the secret? >>>----> Ken

I'm jealous. I made a few board bows with limited success. I made a hickory bow that I shot for about a year before it started to come apart. That was a nice quick bow but I never got to hunt with it.

I did an oak bow that shot for a while. It didn't perform anywhere near what the hickory did. I took it on a few sits but it came apart before long.

I made an oak bendy bow that I was real pleased with for about a dozen shots...then it busted at full draw and smacked me on top of the head.

I have a hickory stave here that a guy sent me but it's on the short side, has some knots and it's a little crooked. I took it down into sort of a bow shape but I really don't know what to do with it. One of these days I guess I should thin it down until it bends and see what happens. LOL

Nimrod and 2 bears, the handle parts are threaded. It's a little bit fussy to single point thread the parts, but the thread is a non-standard size so that's the only way to do it. I made several that way, but not any more. A slip fit into a steel sleeve works just as well and is far easier.

I have hunted with a selfbow for the last 26 years; I may have killed a dozen deer over the years with my bows. One is not handicaped by using a well-made selfbow.

I have not bow hunted in the last 3 years, a broken-down body has slowed me down a bit as I approach 75.

From: George D. Stout
Date: 26-Sep-22

Hope you get to feeling better Eric, it's still wonderful to get to the woods, even to just hold the bow and watch the action. I'm creeping close to that 77 mark in January. :)
