I just picked up this RWH locally and from the Serial number and squared off glass above it, I guessed it was a 1963 Brazilian Rosewood. BUT when I got it home it seemed very orange and removing the strike plate it was actually LIGHTER underneath. In my experience Rosewood fades and it's usually darker under the strike plate. I know the next wood after Rosewood was Bubinga but I really thought this was from the Rosewood years...

This guitar is Brazilian Rosewood. Maybe I have the same wood as in the center of the guitar. Would that be (lighter) sapwood??

Bubinga for the bow but the guitar is a freak for grain and looks like no rosewood I ever saw.

Viewing pictures over the internet are deceiving. From the serial number and decal it should be Brazilian rosewood but is very orangish? If your guitar has Brazilian Rosewood then the handle is the same. Rosewood can very in color a lot.

Bubinga is more reddish.

I could be wrong but I think your bow is bubinga. JMO

I have to go with Jinkster. It looks exactly like my RWH. I think the guitar was stained. >>>---> Ken

Grain Structure in the bow looks like bubinga to me.

Ron do you have a picture of the tips?

This might be a 1964 where they made the last ones with Bubinga, which is what they used in 1965-then it would have a serial number starting with RW.

Here's a link to the Wing Archery Catalogs where in reviewing the Red Wing Hunter lineups you'll notice that the '61 was of African Walnut (with a real funky small'ish grip) while the '62 '63 & '64 seems to be the only 3 years they made the RWH riser of Rosewood which also had a single stage rather low wristed flat'ish grip where in '65 they changed the grip profile to a 2 stage grip went to Bubinga for their '65 '66 & '67 model years but in '67 Wing also offered their new "Lockwood" (laminated sandlewood) alternative for a $10 upcharge over the Bubinga which I find strange because they literally billed the lockwood as "Heavier" where the light mass was considered to be a real virtue for the hunter (where to note?...my Bubinga risered RWH weighs a scant 1LB/10ozs) there doesn't seem to be a '68 catalog (maybe Nam was getting nasty?)...but in '69 they went with Shedua risers and AMF moved into "Wingwood" (laminant)...and things just went a bit AMF sideways from there...

Yup those are the tips that the 1965 Bubinga handled RWH have so suspect yours from 1964 they were testing the Bubinga wood.

Thanks for the effort, Bow Detective! I appreciate it! 1964 / Bubinga it is.
