And I didn't even see a deer, but it was still a great morning! Upper 50's, few leaves falling. I still hunted to one my favorite spots, set up in my homemade grilled, on my old Torges Tree Seat. Several turkeys and plenty of squirrels! I hardly moved a muscle until 12:30, then still hunted back to the truck. I did send one judo at a squirrel I couldn't resist at 20yds, perfect shot just barely cleared his back! Should've seen hit getting up a tree looking for that hawk that just missed him! Amazing how quiet a good recurve is in the woods. He set up there about 15min, then came down went his way. It was all I could do to sit still, not get serious with the squirrels! Then I did some stumping on way back to the truck. I was in the right place, just not my time! Sure enjoyed a fine day, good shooting, and next time I may have more squirrel arrows!

I done messed up! I had to tell my brother about it, he's a squirrel hunting junky. We'll both be back in there later next week. He'll be toting his Sweet 16, and I'll have my Kodiak Hunter. ??

Oct. 1st here in the Pine Tree State. First season in fifty years I will be on the ground for the opener in an Allen cloth blind brushed up 13 yards from the trail, ten yards from three mock scrapes that have already seen traffic.

Season started here in my area September 17th. I've been out every day and seen does but no bucks yet. I wish it was in the 50s here. Been hot and humid here and in the 70s with some rain. :(

Was up at 4:30, gonna hike back to a good spot, make a day of it. Got up, it 56dgr, BUT RAIN! Bow I'm biting at the bit, 4w loaded, rain supposed to pass by 11:30, I've been looking at too many Kodiaks on here! But it'll be perfect for the rest this half day! Feels like mid Oct, so I'm going to a closer spot, anything can happen. It's getting better!

I hate waiting I do too much thinking, but, Lol, I remember one thing clearly! Probably in the mid 1980+-, I was a coal miner, but one them gruesome days you think you won't survive! We had a broke conveyor belt, mid aprox of a 2500ft long belt line, 38" aprox total height, naturally mud & water everywhere! The belt loaded with coal. Only option? Rake couple thousand feet of 36" wide belt clean, on knees yes crawling, then a crew of 9-10 men, pull with all your might, till your guts are coming out, with vise grips as much as possible each loose end back together! Because when you've done that, then you stretch steel cable or chain, put a (Come-a-Long) Chain Ratchet, in between, start jacking! Few hours later of steady jacking, you finally get the ends together. Make a splice, get the belt running!WHEW, UNREAL! And in the middle all that, the Boss says, "Boys, I've seen it get this bad, then get Worse"! And, after 39 years that, I found out so often, He was right! So, today, that's all over, I never quit, not one day without a job, and im still kicking. But the other day, it was getting good! But today boys, it's getting better! And Praise The Lord! He brought me thru all that, and today, it's better, and I Know It! Free to roam the woods with a recurve, and if I see nothing , it'll be a fine day anyways! Sorry, just venting while waiting, but its the truth! Enjoy God's Creation, when you can!

I MISSED! I was in my favorite setup this morning. A big blowdown oak, on a flat point, where a well used logging road goes around it. At 11am a mom and 2 youngns came by, at 13-14 yds by the contour of the ground, I could see from the base of one the little ones belly up, not it's legs, so I let one go conscious of shooting above the ground, but I held a little to high. Perfect alignment but a very small target, just clearing its back. It 4an forward, mom and the other ran back. I said myself play it cool, they may regroup. They did right in front me about 30 minutes later! Amazing how quiet the shot was, but they wad on full alert! Mom even looking up into the trees, there's a used treestand about 500yds away. I could've managed another shot had they not been so alert, looking! They slowly walked on. The ghillie in a fallen tree and recurve, will get the job done, WHEN THE SHOOTER DOES HIS PART! But sizing it all up, I don't feel to bad, I was never nervous, my draw and anchor was perfect a slight hold before I released! Stump shooting on way out, I'm ready for another, dead serious now! Sure would've been tender eating!

Sounds like a wonderful morning in the woods. I can't count how many of my deer hunts have turned into squirrel hunts. LOL!
I think if squirrels (and crappies) were the last two critters on earth to chase/catch I'd be happy as a clam..

It was another perfect Oct morning, although it got kinda warm late. I went to my overall favorite place to hunt, my best friends farm, where I've killed most my deer in the past. But going in the deer numbers I knew are very low there in past several years. Blue tongue did a number on us about 3 years ago, so numbers are down everywhere anyways. Never saw a deer, but its filthy with turkey, so I started the day on a known deer crossing, a hayfield. At near 9am a small flock hens came in, and I made a almost good shot at 22yds. It was going almost straight away with head up, slightly quartering. So I knew I could probably hit the spine, but it apparently barely missed, but must have damaged her hip bad. She hopped trying to fly, but couldn't, then just hopped to the crest of a rise and stood there. Head sinking low and an occasional hop every few minutes! Stood there for near 15 minutes, I thought great gonna die not 50yds away. Then she just managed a big hop took to flight, OH NO! Watched her sail down in a little draw, and I spent a good 2 hours looking, but no recovery! Well as frustrating as it turns out, I'm still high, cause not long ago, I'd no doubt missed her bad, so I'm still up, ready go again, an almost perfect shot! That's one deer I let walk, one I barely shot over her back, and a 1-2" almost on a turkey. Everyone would be meat in freezer had I been with my compound, but I'm sticking with it, my shooting getting better all along! That's my story and I'm sticking to it! And I've went back to file sharpening my Zwickeys, after insisting for some time I'm gonna hone them on a stone, stick, leather, etc, but I can't get them no where near as sharp. So other day I went back to my file, and, one bad mis lick, I sliced my finger decent, not real deep. I've had to keep a bandaid on it for two days, that BS about Coagulation to quick with a file sharpened head is just that, BS! But Zwickeys ain't ideal for Turkeys, so I'll keep a WW handy next time! Yap, quite a day!
